    Garand Receiver?

I was thinking about laying in a Garand receiver before the cluster frick that next year looks to be becomes reality. $$$ is tight, so I just wanted to buy a receiver that could be built up in flusher times down the road.

Not knowing a single thing about garands, can some of the old school garand pros share the what/how/who of buying a receiver. I don't remember seeing them in shops like stripped AR lowers, but I never was on the hunt for one until now.

    Thanks in advance

Look on gunbroker, 300-500 depending on rarity. Remember the rifle will be worth more if you stick with one mfr. for all parts?

I take it a stripped Garand receiver is not something you can stroll into Turners or Gunrunners and dros off the shelf like a AR lower?

Nobody is building stripped Garand receivers like they do for ARs.

No. Mostly because it is not a firearm in modern production.

Aren't you going to require a lot of tooling too? Its not as easy as a AR is to build.

All one needs is a barrel vise, a receiver wrench, a pull through reamer, and guages. The reamer and gauges can be rented. I have all the tools needed and have no problem loaning them out if someone is close enough.

I'm not so much worried about the build. I'm sure time and $$$ (and kind internet offer of help with tools, thanks!) will handle that.

I just wanted "own" a receiver pre 2014.

You can still get a 7.62 NATO barreled reciever from the CMP. From the looks of it people were getting them in 2-3 months, so you'd beat out 1-1-14. Ymmv though

Not knowing a single thing about Garands...
Trust me, you don't want to do this.
Right now (as soon as they're back in stock) you can buy a fine M1, assembled by a professional armorer, for <$700.
Your plan is to buy a barreled receiver, if you can find one, for "$300-$500." But, when you finally get around to "building" it, you will drive yourself crazy and spend $1500-$2500, trying to find all the parts you need.
                        I spent several years piecing together a "G.I." M1 Carbine. I wouldn't recommend it.
