Looking for Clarity Along the Blurry Edges of Legality, search for Truth

I had a question perhaps one of you more experienced guys & women could address and help keep a Newb brother out of trouble...

Ya know those pesky little magazine locks ya gotta open with a tool? OK, this friend of mine had this brother, and before the brother died he had a friend who was a shooter, follow? This friend of the dead brother of my friend had a typical, say SolarTactical maglock on his, let's just call it a VEPR 308 rifle. It's one of those deelies that cover the mag release except for an oblong opening on the bottom through which you insert (hee hee) a tool (hee hee hee) to move the mag release and Voila! Mag released.

I understand that the tool has to be separate from the rifle, can't be a built in component of the rifle. And that reminds me...side bar-Real quick, is it not OK when I have a patch of Velcro loop on the side of my receiver and the hooks on my maglock tool, and stick'em together thusly, thereby keeping said tool close at hand? Cause that would suck if that caused me trouble. Kinda like a magnet though I guess...Input???

Back on topic...so suppose my friend's dead brother's friend had a bolt that was narrow enough to fit inside the oblong opening of the maglock and work the release. Could he put a nut or washer with a diameter greater than the width of the Medulla Oblongata opening of the maglock on the end of that bolt, and then slide the nutted bolt (I have no idea if that is even a term, but it oughta be!) into the maglock from the side so that the nut & a length of bolt went inside the maglock, thereby loosely "suspending" the nutted bolt tool in place while you shoot away, dangling hither & yon, until you give it the proper manipulation to guide it back out of the maglock.

So, the Question (finally) is: Can your maglock tool be suspended from the maglock and in no way affixed to it, without being "attached" to the maglock and thereby the rifle?

Seems to me an argument could be made that the nutted bolt tool (I love that term, "nutted bolt" hope it catches on) is really just balanced there, its movements not restricted by any attachments to the rifle (which reminds me, is a tool on a string that is attached to the rifle not acceptable? I think I recall something along those lines. Any input welcome) and is the same as would be a tool balanced on the receiver cover...just balanced more steadily than the top of the receiver...I really would like the benefit of others' wisdom and input here, any LE with pragmatic comments would also be very welcome. Just trying to clear the boundaries, not trying to obfuscate the intent of the law (at least not any moreso than the "a bullet is a tool" definitional obfuscation).

Another friend had a sister, and before she also tragically died (of degenerative restriction of free flowing thoughts, ideas and actions) she used to babysit this kid who, when he grew older, took up the shooting sports (NO, I do not know what those would be. I'm just trying to be concise here), and his VZ58 maglock was built into the mag release, actually kinda cool, such that the spring pressure on the thumb release (or so it appears) is too strong to allow a human finger to move the release. A pointed tool is required to fulcrum (gerund) the magloc forward thus releasing the magazine.

He got an idea upon receiving his first Dremel-"Best Tool Ever Invented"- to cut a longitudinal opening in the surface of the VZ58 magrelease-lock deelio wide enough for a small flat head screwdriver to fit inside lengthwise and that; when pressed forward, would fulcrum (gerund) the maglock fore, releasing the magazine.

Now this kid was pretty sharp, and he further reasoned that if the screwdriver was inserted such that the flathead was inside the magrelease-lock deelio, that a slight quarter turn of the screwdriver would rotate the flat head perpendicular to the direction of the cut opening, thus preventing the tool from simply dropping straight out of position in the magrelease-lock deelio. That position would allow the screwdriver to, once again, just sorta dangle there, at the ready, while he was shooting. And it would be ready "Johnny-on-the-Spot" when it was time for a mag change. Such a tool wouldn't really be "attached" would it?...more like 'suspended,' or really just balanced there, right?

Would the flat head screwdriver magrelease-lock deelio tool be acceptable?

Or am I just "ASKIN FOR A BEATIN" as they say...just making it easy for the CALiberal Righteously Intolerant Puritans to RAIN HELLFIRE DOWN upon me???

If anyone has any definitive Word on the question of the legality of the maglock tools imagined by these two people known only to the dead relatives of friends of mine, or some relevant practical experience, I would greatly appreciate receiving a little Truth on the subject.

    Thank you, thankyouverymuch.

Jesus man. Cliffnotes please. To answer your question, it cannot be affixed. Don't try a "gray area" not worth the trouble when you can wrap in around your wrist, keep it in a pocket, or hell, bite it till you need it.

velcro question: okay in my book*. It is like the UBBT, you can't use it to actuate the release while it is still attached to the rifle. *(assuming the velcro is not on/in the actual bullet button)

Screwdriver mod: definitely bad. don't try it.

Here's the deal. The shut ins that have big mouths will be here to shout me down, but if you want to avoid arrest, don't fool with stuff like this.

if you can afford to be arrested, and duke it out in court, then by all means go for it and let us all know how it turns out. Maybe you'll set a new precedent! Or maybe the state will drop the case the night before trial after you've spent the money and gone through the anguish.

This is a gun hating state, the police can't stand that you have a firearm of any type, and want any excuse to arrest you. Don't give it to them. The whole fact that you have a bullet button at all should make this obvious.

That said, I enjoyed the parts of the story I understood.

Hey man I'm in my prime and have time to waste. While both of your tragically lost relatives mag lock manipulation ideas seem a bit sketchy to me (god rest their souls) I just wanted to thank you for the funniest read I've had on here in a damned long time!
