Be careful when you go to Sly Park with your OLL AR15

I have been shooting at Sly Park (Eldorado National Forest) for over 20 times and I haven't encountered the law (park ranger) until last Saturday. While I was shooting at 1 inch high medication bottle targets that I set on the ground, a park ranger struck pulled up and the park ranger (a lady) came out and asked me what rifle I was using and what I was shooting at, I told the lady what my targets were and told her my rifles were CZ452 varmint model (17HMR) and ruger 10/22 target model (bulk barrel). Surprising me, the lady did not know anything about these rifles and suspiciously started checking the rifle imprints and asking me idiotic questions such as why did I use bulk barrel for a .22. She left after harassing me for 10 minutes. Several hours later, another park ranger struck (a guy) pulled up and this time was only a quick check and he left.

Luckily, I did not bring my AR15 on the Saturday otherwise I had to visit their station on that afternoon.

If you go there to shoot with your AR15, please make sure:
    1) Bring some legal document about OLL AR15 and a copy of Eldorado National Forest rules and regulations (for target practice) with you
    2) Pick up your brass + targets + trash after you finish
    3) Do not shoot at the trees (even though the tree trunk has thousand of bullet holes on it).
    4) Stay away from lady officer (like her)

    Sorry for a long story.

Remember, a lot (not all) of women and in particular in law enforcement do not know much about weapons. Lady cops (again, not all) typically only know the guns they are required to carry. They are not firearm enthusiasts like most of us. It sounds like she just didn't know what she was doing and definetely didn't know her guns. However, it could of been worse. At least she had enough sense to know she had nothing on you.

She knew that bull barrel was not stock, so she knew something, I still don't actually know what they are for.

Bull barrels in what I know is to allow dissipation of heat to cool down the barrel which allows the shot groups to hold together for a longer period of time of fire.

Umm no. A bull barrels sole purpose is to provide a more rigid barrel that will flex less under it's own weight and will be more massive which has the benifit of being influenced less by the combustion and recoil of firing. The result is less variance between shots, even when rapid firing, which gives more consistant results.

The down side is that the more massive barrel is heavier and retains heat longer so once the barrel heats up to the point that groups suffer it takes more time for it to cool down to be useable again.

First, anyone that does not already police their brass and trash are jerks.

Second, What does this have to do with OLL's? So she looked at your guns, so what? Please elaborate on how your interaction with a Ranger with limited firearm knowledge and OLL's are related.

                  Thanks

I'd like to hear more about the interaction. Asking about bull barrels doesn't qualify as an idiotic question. I'm sure more then a few don't know why they are used on target rifles.

If you have a name, you can write a "letter of concern" to the supervisor & let him/her know of the situation & also slip in an OLL flowchart (nicely laminated) with a couple of the letters from the DOJ about Stag OLL (see Jicko's write up)

Be polite & professional & not just be a turd. It goes a long way. We're trying to win friends not lose them. You can also CC a copy to Gene at Calguns Foundation for record keeping. When you get a reply back, post it & share.

Also an idea which has been done before. Ask the supervisor if you can organize a clean up of the site & help rehabilitate the trees that were been shot, etc. Show them that you are a responsible gun owner & land steward. Community projects like these builds trust & friendship. Ever wonder why REI gets all the attention of the public land managers?

You'll never know. That "lady" might become a friend.

Unless bull barrel is fluted, it will cool it down fast.

I had a buddy who was stopped by a female fish and game officer. She inspected his weapons, I think he had multiple AR's, a Robinson and possibly his FAL in the truck. She instantly went ape s#@t and called in for back-up and said he had "machine guns". After the sheriff and every other fish and game officer showed up! Four hours later he was okay to leave with his guns. She asked "do you have anymore questions before I let you go?". He said "why would I ask you anything? You obviously don't know sh@t!". This was in Hollister.

Could it be that she was just asking you questions and having a conversation with you? To the average person a bull barrel seems like some kind of super sniper system, maybe the fact you had it on a .22 made her curious.

It's obvious from your posting that English may not be your 1st language, and maybe you misinterpreted her questions and maybe can't differentiate between friendly banter and being interrogated?
