I have been shooting at Sly Park (Eldorado National Forest) for over 20 times and I haven't encountered the law (park ranger) until last Saturday. While I was shooting at 1 inch high medication bottle targets that I set on the ground, a park ranger struck pulled up and the park ranger (a lady) came out and asked me what rifle I was using and what I was shooting at, I told the lady what my targets were and told her my rifles were CZ452 varmint model (17HMR) and ruger 10/22 target model (bulk barrel). Surprising me, the lady did not know anything about these rifles and suspiciously started checking the rifle imprints and asking me idiotic questions such as why did I use bulk barrel for a .22. She left after harassing me for 10 minutes. Several hours later, another park ranger struck (a guy) pulled up and this time was only a quick check and he left.
Luckily, I did not bring my AR15 on the Saturday otherwise I had to visit their station on that afternoon.
If you go there to shoot with your AR15, please make sure:
1) Bring some legal document about OLL AR15 and a copy of Eldorado National Forest rules and regulations (for target practice) with you
2) Pick up your brass + targets + trash after you finish
3) Do not shoot at the trees (even though the tree trunk has thousand of bullet holes on it).
4) Stay away from lady officer (like her)
Sorry for a long story.
