    Question Regard Mega Lower Caliber

when i bought my lowers from CWS i happened to purchases 4 lowers total.

    2 Lauers
    1 Mega
    1 RRA

now as far as i knew when i bought them i thought they were all .223

to my suprise after lookin at my Mega and RRA i saw it said on the Mega "Caliber:Multi"

    and the RRA says 5.56

i was thrilled to find that i had atleast one lower that was 5.56 but iam not sure if the mega is also 5.56? since it says multi. can someone elaborate on this with me?

    thanks

Just because a receiver says .223 or 5.56 doesnt mean you cannot have a 6.8 or 9mm upper on them. Multi means it can be any caliber, i believe it was written not to confuse anyone who wanted to build a multi caliber gun. Or a shop making a gun that wanted to use a different caliber.

However, it doesnt matter what caliber you put on any receiver.

No, i believe if you are a commercial firearm manufacturer then you need mark the correct caliber of what the upper is. (someone can confirm this)

I have not heard of any laws to do with gun calibers need to match.....remember, all the lowers are the same and nobody has the right to tell you what to do with your lower- you can put any caliber upper on (just not a 50 bmg)

i didnt know that was how it works... that i can use any upper (.223/5.56)

i thought whatever the lower was marked thats the only upper caliber u could use

            x2delight,

Not to worry, whats written on the receiver does not dictate (both physically and legally) what caliber you're limited to. Regardless of what it may say (6.8, 5.56, .223, MULTI, etc.) the lower receiver can be attached to a variety of uppers. It is the upper receiver that determines what caliber the rifle will be.

The lower receiver is a standard "shell" thats designed and built to accomodate a number of different upper receivers. Its sole purpose it to house the fire control group, and serves as the point of attachment for the upper receiver, magazine, pistol grip, and buttstock.

In a letter dated December 28th 2005 Deputy Attorney General Alison Merrilees stated:

"You should also be aware that we intend to add it soon to the DOJ Assault Weapons Identification Guide. Therefore, the Stag-15 will soon be classified as an assault weapon."

            To Mrs. Merrilees I ask:

            Whats your definition of soon?

i could almost swear i read that the caliber pertains to the lower on calguns by a member.. oh well.. i shoulda asked a little closer.. i guess all my others will be 5.56 since i can interchange with .223

              thanks guys

A upper built for .223 cannot be used to shot Nato 5.56 but a 5.56 can be used to shoot the .223, but you can use any marked lower to shoot both.

And then there's .223 Wylde, which is a weird chamber that can shoot both but is closer to a .223 for accuracy purposes.

Side note, just in case someone reading this is getting confused - the upper assembly, commonly called an upper, is caliber specific because the barrel, feed ramps, etc are on it. In contrast, the upper receiver itself is just a shell; it doesn't care about your caliber. The parts attached to it, however, will care.

so just for clarification, if a lower says multi instead of, say, 5.56mm, the difference between the two is only the what's stamped on the side? the mulit lower isn't built stronger than another kind of lower, for example?

I believe some states really insist that the marking be registered... NJ?
