    Ruger Scope

I want to buy my brother some parts for his new Ruger SS 10/22.
(please specify Cabela's parts, #'s if possible)
I searched the posts and Google but wanted to ask for advice (I am in a hurry to order before his B-day) for the following:

    1) Scope model and size (to shoot 50 and 100 yds)

    2) Rings , base etc

    3) is the Nikon pro staff 4x32 a good buy?

    Thanks!

    Optics...

I've had more 10/22s than any other rifle... currently I have a Leupold Vari-X 2, 4 to 12X40mm, EFR (extended focus... down to 25 yards) if I recall correctly. It is a little too much. I do not need to go to 12X, but a 50X target shooter may. Depends on your application.

I would use a quality 3-9 scope from a good vendor. I prefer to buy top-shelf optics, with lifetime guarantees, that I will be able to move to other guns later. Leupold is expensive, but worth it. Nikon also seems good. I do not buy optics made in China. US, Japan, Germany (Eastern Bloc is almost as good... Zeiss Jena) are great.

As important as the glass are the coatings... anti-reflection, etc...

For a seldom used plinker, a scope from Asia (not Japan) is OK, and much cheaper... Bushnell, Tasco, etc... You generally get what you pay for.

I have Leupold, Burris, Weaver, and Lyman scope.

If you want a fixed power scope, a 2 or 4X will be fine.

For the 10/22, I'd also invest in a better trigger... about $60. This will drop the 9-pound pull to about 4. I'd do a trigger before a heavy barrel, or any other upgrade.

      Mounts...

      Forgot to say...

For mounts, I use Leupold, GG&G, or other quality STEEL mounts.

Also, a Ring lapping kit is helpful.

Rimfirecentral.com is a great place for info on .22's and Rugers in particular. An awful lot of guys (myself included) like the Mueller scope designed just for the Ruger 10/22. Check it at: http://muelleroptics.com/products/MAPV451440S.html

Good optics, large barrel for good light gathering, reliable return to zero and affordable! I bought 3 of them.

Something 3-9x preferably with an adjustable objective.

Talley rings, which are aluminum, work GREAT for me.

                +1 on the Leupold V-II 4-12x

Leupold cantilevered scope base (extends forward of receiver for full size scope rings)
