    Muzzle Break

    Forgive me if this has been asked/answered here before but.... How exactly does a muzzle break work to reduce recoil and muzzle climb?

    Simply stayed, by redirecting gasses in manner that reduce muzzle lift and in some cases, recoil.

        At the muzzle, behind the bullet there is about 10,000psi of hot, expanding gases. When the bullet exits and releases the gases (think of a balloon emptying) there is a rocket-motor effect of those expanding gases.

        A muzzlebrake at the very least redirects those gases to the side and the better designs use some of this energy to actually pull the weapon forward, reducing recoil further.

          You can look at the gasses coming out of the barrel and see that they push in the opposite direction of the bullets direction.....mainly straight back into the shooter. Equal and opposite reaction. The muzzle brake will divert as much as that gas as it can out in a direction other than "straight" out the end of the barrel, lessening the push back of the rifle. Some will have ports angled to actually divert the gasses backward to try to counter the effects of the remaining gasses leaving the end of the brake......like the brake on the big .50 caliber Barrett rifles. Some have ports on the top to counter the muzzle rise.

          The end result is some degree of reduction in felt recoil and muzzle rise depending on the design of the brake, but you also get more noise from the gun then due to the fact the sound will now be directed at an angle closer to you.....not to mention any shooters to the sides of you.

              Newton's third law of motion states that, "When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to that of the first body."

              A firearm forces expanding gasses and a bullet out of the front of the barrel, so the gasses and bullet are exerting an equal force on the firearm, felt as "kick" or recoil. By re-directing some of that gas up or back, a muzzle brake both lessens the force to the back and up and actually provides some "assist" in keeping the barrel down and forward.

              A firearm without a brake is like a big rocket aimed at the shooter; one with a brake is like a big rocket aimed at the shooter, but also fitted with retro-rockets aimed in other directions.

                  The escaping gas pushes forward on the walls of the brake, eliminating some recoil. The larger the brake, the more surface area for the gases to push against, lessening recoil even more.

                    The hot gases and air in front of and behind the bullet as it travels down the barrel impinge(slam into) upon the muzzle brake. Those forces try driving the recoiling gun forward decelerating it.The larger the surface area the gases can impinge upon the more efficient the brake will be.Two identical brakes with one being 5/8 inch diameter and the other being 1.25 inch diameter the larger brake will lessen the felt recoil more than the thinner brake.

                    Picture yourself getting into a hotrod and smashing the peddle to the floor.You are accelerating up to 100 mph when you slam on your brakes.You are still traveling forward but instead of being pinned into the seat you are trying not to hit the dash.

                    Your rifle is still recoiling into your shoulder but the gasses hitting against the holes/slots.expansion chambers walls are slowing the recoil down just like the brakes on the above mentioned hotrod.

                      To complicate:
                      There are muzzle brakes. Reduce recoil by sending gas back and to the sides.
                      There are compensators. Compensators send gas out in a pattern to reduce muzzle rise.
                      Some do both to varying degrees.

                      Some also reduce flash at the same time.
                      sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.
