avoid the following: IO, Lancaster and Iron Clad Armory

I wouldn't put Lancaster rifles in the same category as an IO or Iron Clad. Maybe recently but if you can find a older used Lancaster from about 8 years ago - it's going to be a nice solid quality rifle.

the mags that cdnn is selling are commercial mags that are fine for range use but they lack metal lugs, which can cause your magazine to break if your rifle is dropped. kvar has a video on their site about the commercial vs mil spec mags.

Chet (from Lancaster) has a less than stellar reputation in the AK community. but you're right about the older ones.
