    Psl, bent up brass

I took the psl out, The gun beats up the brass casings pretty good. They're getting dented up in the neck area. No way they'd good for reloading. The spent cases also come out with velocity. They'll maybe fly a good 25 or more feet. I'm shooting lightball surplus ammo. I'm not sure what kind of ammo it is, anyone know? Are the dented casings normal for the psl? Other then that the gun shoots flawless.

Nope that's normal. At least it was with mine. The surplus stuff is not woth reloading. Its steel cased that's been copper-washed. With a Berdan primer. Just keep shooting.

With an adjustable gas block you might be able to tone it down a bit, but at heart its an AK, thats just part of the game with them.

Beat up brass is par for the course with most ak's. the ammo you have pictured is Yugoslavian heavy ball, and is berdan primed so you're going to need some specialized tools and berdan primers to reload it.

Be careful shooting that heavy ball stuff through your psl. It cycles the action with a lot more oomph than is necessary. Without some kind of adjustable gas system it will cause the bolt carrier to beat the hell out of the rear trunnion.

Yeah it's my skyline. I bought the psl a while back.

My romy g does the same thing I believe (do you have a pic of the bent brass).. Is it normal for AKs?? The neck of the casing is usually flattened out..

I just took some slow motion video of two PSLs firing for a barrel-whip study. The standard gun is a Cugir made rifle and among other things is extremely over-gassed and tosses the brass 20~25'. If you stop the video at various points you can see the case mouth striking the side of the receiver. The heavy barreled rifle is gas regulated and drops the cases about 2-3' to the side.

The over-gas situation creates other problems too and there are a couple of things you can do to regulate it.

OK even if you make a decapping device like I did to remove the Berdan primers, you will find that that size primer for the 7.62 x54R is not available anywhere that I could find. A good friend has 2 five gallon buckets of Yugo berdan primed brass (fired). I took a PSL chamber stub and made a decapping device using water and it works great but after doing about 100 rounds I started looking for primers to no avail.......

There is a slight mod you can make to the receiver and ejector that will save your brass. I'll post some pics with a better description when I get back home.

OK, I performed these mods and it subtly changed the ejection pattern. Now my brass isn't destroyed.

I didn't come up with the mod, but here's my notes.

First, take a flat file and extend the factory bevel on the edge of the receiver rail near the ejection port. Take it all the way down to parallel with the ejector. This keeps the transition point of the bevel from nicking the cases on ejection.

Secondly, you can take a Dremel diamond bit and ever so slightly change the inner curve radius of the ejector. The purpose is to make the ejector "tip" contact the fired case toward the middle of the base, where it's actually flat as indicated by the red arrow on the right...instead of contacting the case on the outer edge of the rim as indicated by the arrow on the left.

This shift of where the ejector tip contacts the case moves the ejection pattern a few degrees more upright (counter-clockwise) and flings the cases up over the right side receiver rails.

The brass now just has the case mouths a little distorted (if anything) instead of big nasty dents in the case walls.

I did the same as Mr. Fate on mine, but I also threaded the gas port and put a set screw in there with a smaller diameter hole. Reduced the gas flow. No more bent up brass, doesn't throw em as far. All in all nice improvements.

Does this mod allow you to use heavyball ammo without damaging the gun?

Yes it would. and you could make multiple set screws with different size openings to adjust your gas system for any ammo.
