Background: I'm planning a Remington 700 switch barrel rig. I will be shooting mostly short-action cartridges (.243, .308), but I would like the option to switch barrels to a long-action round should I wish to.
I'm pretty sure the USMC M40 uses a long-action receiver, even though the standard rifle is chambered for the short-action 7.62 NATO.
My main concerns with this combination are questions regarding magazines and reliable feeding. Will bottom metals designed for short-action receivers be able to be used in stocks designed for long-action receivers? Or alternately, can a long-action magazine be used to reliably feed short-action cartridges? Does anybody know what the Marines do to make the two compatible? Are there any other concerns/problems with this combo that I'm not considering?
Thanks! Cheers!
