    Short-action cartridge in long-action receiver? Rem700

Background: I'm planning a Remington 700 switch barrel rig. I will be shooting mostly short-action cartridges (.243, .308), but I would like the option to switch barrels to a long-action round should I wish to.

I'm pretty sure the USMC M40 uses a long-action receiver, even though the standard rifle is chambered for the short-action 7.62 NATO.

My main concerns with this combination are questions regarding magazines and reliable feeding. Will bottom metals designed for short-action receivers be able to be used in stocks designed for long-action receivers? Or alternately, can a long-action magazine be used to reliably feed short-action cartridges? Does anybody know what the Marines do to make the two compatible? Are there any other concerns/problems with this combo that I'm not considering?

    Thanks! Cheers!

The best way to answer your concerns is to find somebody who has a Rem. 700 in 30-06 (long action) and try cycling a spent 308 class cartridge case through the magazine into the breech. The USMC M40 action is a medium length Rem 40X action (308/7.62 NATO). Before medium length actions became more common, thanks to both Remington and Sako, nearly all the manufacturers used an internal cartridge block to compensate for excessive space in the magazine.

Army did it for ALONG time with there M24's. Badger even makes a bottom metal for the BDL floor print that takes short action AICS mags. Try building a heavy barrel 30-06. It can shoot 190s at 2900 FPS. I built a few. And am building another now.

The short action receiver is stiffer than the long action receiver, however the long action receiver extra length makes for a longer bedding surface. Detachable magazines are another issue entirely but your choices may be limited to 308 or 308 family of cartridges. For internal magazines, the Remington doesn't have any problems feeding different length cartridges with just a simple magazine spacer change.

Just to be clear, you mean they make bottom metal that takes short-action mags, but can be used on a long-action rifle? That would be exactly what I'm looking for.

If so, I can't seem to find it on the Web. Any further info?

          Thanks.

I suppose you could swap the standard bdl bottom metal back in when you are switching barrels and then be able to use the long action cartridges in the bdl bottom metal.

If you inletted the stock for long action DBM, then the short action m24 DBM is not going to fit correctly.
You could have a different stock setup for each, but at that point, you might as well just get another action and finish the second rifle...

Lynn they are eather getting rebarreled and sold to a limited list of people. Or changed to 300win and a new expensive chassis installed. The M24s that is. He needs the badger bdm that is for the M24.

And one final question before retiring this topic. Is there anything different about the M24 receiver compared to my civilian long-action receiver? In other words, can I use that Badger bottom metal on my receiver just as easily as I could on the M24's receiver?

Thanks again for all your help!
