        Good post Cypress.

Been a while since I've touched up or even shot LR. I was off on my fuzzy memory. Again good post I needed that little brush up.

          You should look into Vortex.

I've played around with a lot of scopes and Vortex seems to have one of the best reasonably prices scopes with tons of performance compared to many and with the best warranty in the market. No questions asked lifetime warranty even if you break the scope yourself.

Another I would look into also bushnell. I believe they have this program right now in which you can buy a scope from them and if you dont like it, return it within a year, no questions asked full refund, minus shipping.

          I'd go with Vortex though....

Then we can give you the information you are looking for....?
Reasonable price range would be around $300-500 I would assume, unless that's like dirt cheap quality. Basically anything that's not going to cost me more than the gun itself.

I'm not going to be hunting just yet, looking to just shoot groups and really get a feel for it, 100-300 yards (for now).

Also, what should I avoid and look out for when buying one?

I think some/most will agree a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40($250ish) is about the baseline, at least that's what I've gathered, which is why I have one on top of my 700.

After that the sky, or your wallet, is the limit. If you have the coin stepping up to something adjustable would likely serve you well, a lot more flexible than a fixed-power. First Focal Plane would be best if you plan on learning Mil-Dots or similar reticles for their range finding and/or bullet drop abilities. Allows the reticle marking to be accurate at all scope magnification levels.
The actual value of above $.02 is less than $.01 after taxes.

I love the G2DMR reticle and the glass is great for the price range.

Coupled with a solid set of rings and a good base (I like the Seekins rings and bases myself) and you will have one hell of a setup.
THAT, or the 3.5-21 with the same reticle. Once you compare all the manufacturers, models, etc, you will not find a better scope for the pricepoint than the two models above.

I'd vote vortex on this. best bang for buck for what people normally ask for out of glass. Can't get any better than that other than spending the $$$ for entry level high end

I a big fan of primary arms. I have 2 of their 4-14X44 Mil/Mil FFP scopes. thousands of rounds through both in 223 and 308 no issues with sub moa groups when i do my part and use good ammo. Glass is clear, holds zero.

It's not a Leupold or Nightforce, but as far as best bang for the buck, at about $200 I don't think it can be beat

One more for the bushnell elite tactical line. Really solid. Made in Japan. Lifetime warranty. Hold them up next to comparable Leopolds and they are just as good (for the savings)

                          Leupold Rifleman Series

Have you seen the Rifleman series from Leupold?
                          I ordered a 3x9x40 for about $225.
Mounted it on my Remington 700 .222.
I am still in the initial sight-in process but the quality and lifetime warranty are true Leupold.
There are reviews for this scope all over the net and mostly outstanding!

Under $1000, Bushnell and Vortex pretty much own the market right now. I haven't used a Vortex scope yet, but I have owned several Bushnell scopes over the years. The fixed 10X mil dot scope is a pretty solid optic for under $300. Decent glass, good adjustment range, and rock solid tracking with mil knobs that match the mil dot reticle. My only complaints with the fixed 10X is the lack of side parallax adjustment, and the wire reticle. Under some lighting conditions, the reticle can reflect light back through the tube and wash out against the background. Not a huge issue, but it can be annoying when shooting out in the desert.

If you can bump your budget up to around $750.00, I'd suggest taking a look at the Bushnell 3-12X44 FFP with G2DMR reticle. Digital Oasis has them for $736 last time I checked. I've run one of these on an SPR style AR-15 for about the last 9 months or so. Scope has performed flawlessly so far. With the G2 I can use the reticle itself for holdovers out to about 900 yards with this rifle if I wanted to, although I've only shot out to about 780 yards with it so far. Not having to constantly screw with the elevation knob is a big plus with this scope. If you know your dope, transitions between targets at varying distances happen as fast as you can swing the rifle onto target and settle into your holdover point on the reticle.

LOL! We went camping last weekend and had a buddy with a prius...our cars (even my wifes yaris) cruised up the steep incline with no problem. The Prius slow down to a crawl and was going 35mph...after that the driver swore to sell the car. lol. Not the best car in CA.

As for scope for your rifle. BARSKA is top!
