I'll be building my first AR, and thought I would pick some of your brains for advice and maybe some do's and don'ts. Searched the threads but didn't see much on the topic. I have a LRB lower that I will be putting a colt parts kit in. I want to put some wood furniture on this with A2 style butt stock if that the correct way of saying it. Where I'm a little confused is going to be the upper with the carry handle. I see they are built with the upper receiver but then have seen some with the attachment on the upper rail, I like the built in handle myself. More insight in that area would be appreciated. Next would be the barrel and gas system. Don't know much of this area either but possibly a 18"-20" barrel is what I'm thinking. Anyone else built one of these ? Basically going for the M16 look with wood furniture. Thanks.

AR clone build

did you search everywhere but Centerfire rifles??? lol
The solid carry handle design is referred to as "A2" and the flat top is referred to as "A3". If you get a flat top upper and a carry handle attachment, make sure your front sight block is marked "F" and is not mismatched; however, a mismatch on a 20" rifle doesn't really matter.
what do you want to know about the gas system and barrel. I can guarantee there are 100's of threads on this forum regarding those. You just have to

That little bit of info was helpful. I guess maybe I should have put in something else on the search engine other than AR clone build huh? Didn't get much back other than sales. When buying a barrel do you separately buy the gas system or does it come with it?Comment

when you buy an upper receiver ASSEMBLY, it will come with a barrel and gas system installed. may or may not come with a BCG.Retired AccountComment

There's a cool wood set for sale in the marketplace right now.
And here's a good post that will answer a lot of you questions - https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/...d.php?t=555451
A3 flattop upper with an A2 carry handle and you're all set!
Then if you want to mount a scope or dot you have the option to remove the carry handle.I ain't no rough guy, ain't no tough guy. Don't get out much, and don't dress up fly. A pawn in the game that's all I am. Givin all my duckets to Uncle Sam, ...

Clones are fun but the best thing about not being issued a rifle is being able to make it exactly the way you want. Sounds like you want a clone but not really go for it I personally hate wood on an AR I would be much more inclined to have wood on a M1A or earlier rifle.Comment

Some people aren't into and that's cool. It's not going to be a safe queen but the good thing about wood is you can sand and refinish. I also have a M1 and you can always have two stocks, one for getting dirty and one for show. I think I will eventually have both for this rifle though the plastic and wood.Comment

The plastic used is almost indestructible, which is why it is used. Plastic hand guards and stocks are lighter as well. If you want a retro AR then you need to search for those type upper receivers.
I think some important things to look at are barrel quality, do you want the accuracy of a stainless steel barrel or the longevity of a chrome lined barrel? M4 feed ramps are generally more desirable as is a M16 BCG over the lighter AR15 BCG. Build from the inside out for best performance.
Later we will tell you how to best deal with the really important AR problems like those pesky brass stains on the shell deflector
.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

3 senior members here once talked about building an AR15, the thread only lasted about 8 replies when they decided it was too hard and since then nobody has ever ever ever talked about it. The next day they covered AR vs AK and Eotech vs Aimpoint, both topics never spoken about again either. . .The California Moderate Centrist Militia member in exile
