How do you sell a Thompson "Tommy Gun"?

If I know someone who has a Tommy Gun and he wants to sell it in California but he doesnt know if it is registered because he inherited it from a deceased family member, how does he legally sell it?

I dont know enough about this process to tell him.

thanks in advance for the info!

    An actual Thompson submachinegun?

Owning one of those in CA requires a machine gun permit, as well as the gun being registered with the Feds.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

1st get the info that is on the reciever of the weapon, then go through this flow chart....

then check this to see if it is "on the list"

if its on any of these lists it cannot be had here or sold here in CA.

Keep in mind there are many CA legal "Thomsons"

OK, I will start. If it is a full auto "tommy gun" It is a felony to have without state /fed. permit. I think any semi auto tommy gun in this state has to be altered to be legal(bullet button,10 round magazine, etc.)

Most of them I see are semi auto. However, you would have to alter the stick mag and install a bullet button. I dont know if anybody makes a bullet button for that gun. The stick mags and the drum mag are all over 10 rounds.
The only ones I see for sale are from out of state.

LOL, I read that. My favorite part:

I’ve done some pretty remarkable things for clients that are caught with machine guns, but they get a bill. If you decide to go against my advice, here…<redacted even though it is already on the Internet>, this is how to reach me when you get caught, write it down.

There is a company that makes a bullet button for the Thompson, I have one installed on my legally owned semi-auto Thompson. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the company who made it. I know that doesn't help much, but they are out there.

If it is semi and looking to sell, simply take the pistol grip(s) off. Why the big deal about bullet buttons. Make it featureless and let the next buyer worry about the bb.

Had one i family pre ban. We were all out have some BLM land fun when Thankfully a big guy had control of the weapon when the hammer catch failed and it went full auto until it was empty. Spoon after the family member sold to a friend in Nevada where it was legal. HEAVY SOB they are.

Prince50 makes one, so does Assault Planet. The Assault Planet one isn't the best design, but it does its purpose.

If it is a real full auto Thompson then you might want to pick up a copy of Shot Gun News. There are several big legit buyers advertising to buy full auto guns. Check them out and call several for quotes.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

its only worth big bucks if it is federally registered with ATF as a machinegun. If it is an MG, the OP's "friend" would be well served to find the NFA registration paperwork for it. if he can't, then he should contact a lawyer who can then contact ATF on his behalf to see if ATF's records shows it being registered. If registration can be found, that gun can be worth north of $20k, unregistered it is only worth the value of the parts kit, around $1k. if he has an MG, registered or not, his first call should be to an attorney. an MG in CA is a state violation, even if federally registered. per comments on NFA-centric forums, ATF has worked with people to get papered MGs out of CA and to a buyer in a free state.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?
