If you could only have two ..

    Would appreciate your expert advice.

So, I already have an LMT M4 upper and Stag/CMT lower, NM trigger, etc build going on for the 5.56. Obviously this is going to be a legal break open 10 shot rifle. I want another rifle but need to choose between a AR15 6.8 SPC or a M14 (probably a loaded Scout 18", maybe with a tricked out CA legal Sage or other stock).

Question: If you could only have two long rifles and your choices were limited to AR15 5.56, and only one of the two: AR15 6.8 SPC or M14, what would you choose and why?

Thanks in advance. I hope this question does not tick anyone off. I did a search prior to sending this but could not really come up with sufficient data to help me decide and you all seem to have considerable experience over me in this area.

I'd say m14. Because it's a fun rifle to shoot. You can use detachable magazines. Ammo's cheaper and easier to find.

Personally, I would take M14 style rifle. Get the full length 22" model.

For old-fasioned shooters like me, M14 style rifles are the best.

6.8 is also cool and powerful. But for thoes who do not pay attention, it's just another AR.

        .02

Food for thought, if u stayed with AR style rifles you'd share a lot of parts between the two rifles. Even the 5.56 mags would work for the 6.8.

If you only have two, I'd set one up for in close and the other for little more FPS.......

Definately an M14.. they're addictive, like a drug

pick up the M1A since you already have an AR, you can always get a 6.8 upper later.

The problem with the 6.8 is the ammo. Right now, it's expensive and not readily available. I've seen it online for $16+/20rds. It's just too much for me to make the investment.

I'd take the M1A. You've got plentiful and relatively cheap ammo (including mil-surp).

If you have the means, buy another lower now. Save up and buy your M1A. When you're looking for that 6.8 Project, buy an upper and build the break-top 6.8 when the funds come available. Who knows, by then maybe the 6.5 Grendel will have taken over the world.

I would say get another lower, and then store it while you play with the M14.

M14, because I like to have my guns in NATO cal. If WW3 starts I want to be able to shoot ammo that will be easy to find. 5.56, 308, 9mm, 50BMG will all be very easy to find. I pitty the man who has to find 6.8 in a time of war. This is all based on "ONLY TWO" rifles and a very big "What If". If I could only have two it would be in NATO cal's.

Also, 5.56 mag will not work with 6.8 rounds.

                        M14 or M1A

I have a Springfield M1A with about 800 rounds through it. It shoots about 1 MOA at 100 yards with iron sights off the bench. I love it. Mags (detachable legal) are available, it's a powerful round at .308 and if I needed it, I have it. You can always buy a separate 6.2 upper and swap it with your common AR-15 lower.

You will eventually end up with all of them so buy the most affordable ones first.

                              Sadlak Scope Mount

That is a whole other thread but if you go to the second page that is a picture of my M1A. I did a ****load of research, found Sadlak, sent em praising his website, got into a great conversation, bought one of five specially coated TiN Aluminum mounts from him. I love it and actually bought a second from him. So I went camping in the Sierras last summer, took that photo, sent it to him and gave him permission to use it. Lock up is perfect but takes several minutes to mount and unmount. I love it.
