Pitting on AR15 bolt?

Hi all,

I have an M&P15 with about 150 rounds. First range trip I put in 100 rounds. Cleaned, put back into safe, no issue.

Next range trip (about 6 months later) I only had time to put through 50. Didn't clean it immediately until about a week later.

That's when I noticed some pitting on the bolt. First range trip I shout AE, next range trip I shot PMC (.223 55gr for both instances).

Should I be concerned? I let it soak in CLP for 24 hours, I'm not sure if it's carbon buildup.

Not pitting, its carbon build up. Scrape off once in awhile and you will be fine

Ah, forgive my ignorance, thank you for the reply.

What's the best way to remove the carbon? Steel wool or something? Thanks again.

I use a stainless dental pick but they sell tools for it that work well

Knife, cleaning rod, dental pick, etc.

You just need to use elbow grease :-) That's caked on carbon. A wire brush works best, but try soaking in CLP or some other solvent to loosen it a bit. Then scrub hard, don't be afraid to hurt it.

fews drops of hoppes on the area followed by a copper wire brush will get that tail lookin fresh again

That area doesn't really need to be cleaned but I still clean it once in a while. Those were the days when I used to go shooting though

^^ I agree. No need to clean it off. Clean it with the mouth of a spent case if you must clean it.

never mind what ammo he's using, what kind of ammo are you using?

That is not pitting. It's carbon build up and you can scrape it off. Use Fireclean and it will help reduce build up there.

yeah seriously, ive used all kinds of factory ammo and all kinds of different rounds ive reloaded myself and always have carbon buildup
