I don't like this post!! I've been looking at the Henry 30-30 lever action - almost talked the fiance into it for herself...now, I have to look at the .357's! Darn you! Now, to get her to say yes!

She's "scared" of my 5.56 BCM rifle, even though she's shot it and seemed to have fun. She loved the feel of the Henry 30-30, just in the store...

If she's hesitant with the 5.56, that 30-30 will give her some serious pause. My wife wouldn't shoot my 30-30s after her first couple of rounds, but she has a great time shooting my .357/.38 1894 (so much so, I don't get to shoot it...the reason I ordered the 1873).

I told my wifey I'm buying a lever and she replies "no!" Then I tell her she can buy a new purse and she changes it to a quick "ok baby" lol. The old "babe its for the safety of us and our family" arguement works pretty good

That argument for "safety" no longer helps after the third or fourth purchase.

You will be fine with either caliber. If you plan to shoot a lot, get the 357 so you can use 38 special.

No, the point is not that the 5.56 has too much recoil, or is too loud or anything, she doesn't like how heavy it is, plus, she thinks it looks "scary".

We went to see a Marlin 30-30 last evening, and she doesn't like it at all compared to the Henry 30-30: too top heavy. We then held the Rossi 44 Mag (I wouldn't get her that one) and she didn't like that either. I must admit, I don't care for the Rossi rifles at all. They don't do anything for me.

So, we'll try to find the Henry 30-30. I'm also looking for the Marlin shorted 30-30 - 16" barrel, 6.5 lbs as compared to the 20" barrel and 7 lbs of the Marlin 30-30.

I've looked for the Henry .357 and besides being very hard to find, they are about 8.6 lbs and over $900!! I won't even look for the Rossi .38...

              I'll keep looking...thanks!

Check the marlin owners board, not sure if you have to join to see the for sale or not, but there are a lot of good buys that come and go,

The .357 Henry is worth every penny for the action alone.

I will say that it doesn't like .38 very much. Even the +P rounds. The shorter cases just don't get the bullet seated into the rifling as well so it's not as accurate. But its fine for shooting 50 yards or so.

The .357 on the other hand, especially the hot handloads I've been using, wow! Like I said above I was able to hit a human sized silhouette at 300 yards with the standard iron sights. 9/9 shots at 200 yards for a dinner plate gong too.

It's definitely heavy though, but if she's shooting from a bench and some sandbags that shouldn't be an issue. The recoil and noise are quite a bit less than the 5.56, and that's saying something.

Yep, my lever guns are heavier than any of my M4s.

Good input, thanks! My BCM has a bipod, multiple sling mounts, scope, handle, and quad rails, so it's on the heavy side

Looking for the Henry .357 now...

Well, since the Henry .357 was about 8 1/2 lbs, I just bought the Winchester 1892 Carbine .357 - only a little more than the Henry, and comes in at 6 lbs!

                            Already ordered ammo too!
Now, to order a gun safe!! Reading the Safe threads...oh man!

                            Peace out,

I love my Winchester .357 Mag carbine... if I need more punch from a lever action I'll grab my .45-70 guide gun.
