Crazy thought .223 rimfire AR will it be legal lol

Not that it would happen anytime soon, any thoughts as too why there aren't any .223 or above rimfires?

And if it were possible to a make rimfire .223 to the same exact specifications as our beloved centerfire .223, and lets just say some creative company manufactures a modified AR bolt which will accommodate to the imaginary .223 rimfire, would this contraption be LEGAL in PRK zuhahahahahahhahahahahhahah!

    Just my 2 cents.

been discussed many times before,I believe Bushmaster holds the patent and has chosen not to develop it .

      Rimfire can't handle the pressures

There are a ton of threads on rimfire vs centerfire. The basic answer is that rimfire cartridges are too weak to handle the tremendous pressures.

That's the spirit! Even though this particular idea won't quite work, keep racking the brain and share more ideas with us.

Not that I thought it would work because if it did wed have it by now. Just venting, and thinking of ways of sticking it to the system. I'm a recent transplant to your state, and am still quite disappointed about the laws and attitudes towards firearms the elites and lawmakers alike have.

Oh well, maybe it will rub off someday . I miss my NON PRK COMPLIANT AR's I had to sell before I left Maine.

Before I discovered OLLs, and knew much about the .223 round, I had this rimfire idea also.

In the early days, I scoured the internet for days trying to find a larger cartridge in rimfire, obviously to no avail.

Still, it would be a cool other option if a larger rimfire AR could be produced for those in Cali.

I believe it's actually Armalite that holds the patent, if I'm not mistaken.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is what do you think will happen when the spring tension on that very heavy buffer spring, or any semi-auto designed to contain a larger than .22 caliber round, shoves that bolt forward and strikes the rim of the relatively weak case, which is designed that way so it can be crushed by the firing pin?

                And that's just for starters...

I've always said it; what we need is an eccentric fire cartdige. Europe has already been using Berdan primers for years. It wouldn't take much to take a notched firing pin and make a primer that is a doughnut shape where hitting the center does nothing. Problem solved.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the first metallic cartridges in the late 19th century ALL rimfires?

Why don't they just give another company that's willing to produce it authorization to do so as long as they pay some respects to Bushmaster? Perhaps Bushmaster has something up their sleeves for the future.

You'd have to have a crazy mag design too.....like a giant 10/22 mag so the cartridges would not catch on each other and such....

Reading this thread, and admitting a lack of knowledge on the subject, but what about an AR-15 shooting the 17HMR round? As I recall, they're rimfire, with a decent bit of powder behind them, and fairly good accuracy. Has that idea been tossed around?
