    Pistol caliber rifles.

How do you guys feel about the walther g22 rifle? Thinking about getting one for cheap shooting. Or is there anyother fairly inexpensive pistol caliber rifle i should look into.

If you're looking at a 22, and have some AR lowers, I would buy the V-22 upper for one of your AR lowers. You'll thusly have a legal drop-mag AR, and can put all the evil features you want on it.

Additionally, it doesn't seem to have cycling issues when dealing with low powered ammo. It digests the copper-washed Federal from Wally World with complete impunity, but really sounds neat with the CCI high-velocity ammo.

As for pistol caliber, eh... I'd check into pistol-caliber uppers for your AR.

SB23 states that only a "centerfire with a detachable magazine, plus one "evil feature"..pistol grip etc." since this is rimfire it is not subject to SB23 and can run a detachable grip with all the goodies.
        Please, calm down.

Check the assault weapon law, it's all about CENTERFIRE cartridges. 22LR is a RIMFIRE cartridge.

If it were illegal, one would presume I would have been arrested for having this (and some LEOs and range employees have admired and shot it):

Oh, I should mention as well that DPMS has an upper which I understand can fire either .17HM2 or 22LR, depending on which barrel you install... both of those are rimfire cartridges and thus exempt.

Personally though, I like the V-22, it only cost me $260!

How difficult is it to find and build a .22LR AR?

As difficult as putting a new upper on it, if you can push out two pins and put them back in, you can do this.

Sorry, I meant to ask how difficult is it to find .22LR conversion parts. I wouldn't even know where to begin looking.

I spent a while searching around on the net a bit ago... it seems that the V-22 upper, which I'm so fond of, is no longer available for sale online. Yeah, folks can go for the DPMS route instead, but it costs twice as much and I seriously doubt you get twice the performance...

Buy a complete conversion kit- several companies make these. You could also buy a dedicated ,.22LR upper, and a mag for it- that keeps the gunk out of your gas system (there isn't one).

Here's one very good reason to go for the dedicated 22 upper, rather than the conversion kit:

A conversion kit does not prevent your AR from accepting standard magazines. By pulling the conversion kit out of the system, you could insert a standard 223/5.56mm magazine and immediately have a full-out assault weapon.

If you want the assault weapon exception of using a rimfire cartridge, make sure that your gun is a DEDICATED rimfire firearm. Sure, you could pop a couple of pins and swap over to a normal upper from your dedicated 22 upper, but a chamber conversion is far less effort to convert.

It's also a good thing that the V-22 upper will not permit standard AR mags to lock into place. The DPMS upper probably has the same feature as well...
