Did some google searching on this. I believe that the RF is rimfire. There was a mention of a 8mm RF being a 9mm that is necked down. Looks like it's something that started pre 1890. I do not believe that it is a SG.

Don't quote me, I know very little, but it appears to be what is called in the UK, and possibly other parts of Europe, a "garden gun" for shooting pests and "vermin" in the garden. The link above shows both ball and shot implementations.
