So I payed a visit to San Jose Gun Exchange, got to chat up one of the guys there a little bit, and I spotted a rack devoted to SKS rifles... I didn't care much for some of the Romanian or Yugoslavian ones they had, they had one Chinese one that was missing the insignia thats supposed to be on the left side of the receiver (was common though), but two Russian SKS rifles just caught my eye. I could tell they were slightly later versions. Laminated stocks, matching serial numbers, manufactured in Tula, slings were in very good condition, still had their blade bayonets. Now I'm in dilemna.
I really want an SKS now, and the Mosin nagant M91/30 is starting to lose a little appeal because of this. (The store didn't carry any M91/30s, just 2 unissued Polish M44s and a Russian one that obviously saw a lot of action)
Pros of buying an SKS:
1. Its semi-automatic.
2. Not as heavy recoil, might be a good gun as I'm going to be first time shooter.
3. Blade style bayonet as opposed to Nagant's spiked bayonet.
4. Higher capacity for rounds.
5. Good excuse to stock up on 7.62X39mm so I'll be set for the day that the Assault Weapon Ban is Repealed, "in accordance to the prophecy."
6. Not as heavy, My dad, a former Taiwanese officer, complained about the weight of the M1 Garand (which I found very heavy too), I couldn't imagine myself carrying a full size rifle like the M91/30 until I get older and stronger.
7. Stripper clips not as expensive or as hard to find, should be a lot more reliable than any Mosin nagant clip.
8. I can get a more expensive gun off my dad while I'm still not legally an adult
Cons of buying an SKS:
1. I won't have a bolt action rifle to pull. (and its a great feeling to be pulling the bolt back and having all the little kids stare at you)
2. Isn't a WW2 item like the M91/30 was.
3. I can't pretend to be Vasili Zaitsev.
4. I won't have an excuse to buy several sardine cans of 7.62X54R anymore.
5. I'd feel kind of guilty because I'm making my dad spend more money. (But then again, he wants an M1 Garand so whatever purchase I make would be minute compared to what he'd get if it were't CMP)
Maybe some of you can offer me a suggestion to tip me one way or another. They seem like two good rifles I would be proud to have slinged on my shoulder. Both Russian, man, guns are like a gateway weapon, once you get into one, you want to get em all!
Edited to add: By the way, anyone with experince buying SKSs, do they come with other accessories aside from the sling? I know the Mosin Nagants come with complete accessorie kits for free provided your dealer isn't a bastard. It'd also be helpful if maybe one can list what kind of accessories which might be important to it? (Whats the Russian Ammo Pouch anyways? I've heard that the Chinese have 10 stripper clip/magazine bandoliers which might be very cool to have)
