SPR Build: Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 vs SWFA SS 3-15x42

So I'm pretty much finished with my SPR build and all I need now is a Vltor A5 buffer that I've backordered from Midway. The next step is to figure out what scope I'm gonna put on it. I've already purchased a Larue SPR-S mount so either of these scopes will be compatible. What do you guys think? The Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 or the SWFA SS 3-15x42. I know the SWFA has superior glass quality but the Vortex has more features and a better warranty.

Not a huge fan of the SS reticle. Also its hard to beat Vortex's CS. PST is a great scope. Dont rule out the Bushnell 6-24 or there 3-12 with the G2 Reticle.

The two SWFA scopes I have are the HD models, which have some pretty amazing glass at the price point, noticeably better than the Vortex, but I’ve never actually compared it to their non HD line. I hear the glass is very good, but I’m sure it was stack pretty well compared to the Vortex PST.

The SWFA is a FFP scope, and to get the same from Vortex will cost you more money than what SWFA is asking for the 3-15.

I have both SWFA and Vortex PST optics and I like them both…

Based on what? The normal SS scopes aren't that great optically.

Of those two I'd pick the vortex.

Personally my 'SPR' has a Sightron on it and I am very happy with it. The glass is good and everything about it works as it should, plus it is very very lightweight.

However, now that I'm looking at the Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44, it does seem to have all the features that I want. I'm really gonna consider it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Take a look into the Bushnell 3-12X44 FFP with G2DMR. I feel lik a parrot or broken record sometimes because I suggest this scope for just about every application. I ended up going with this scope on my SPR, and haven't regretted the decision at all. The rifle has proven extremely capable out to the max of 650 yards that I've shot it at. Given it's performance at 650, I think 750 to 800 yards is well within the capability of this rifle/scope combo. Keep in mind that 650 is also done just with holdovers for elevation and windage using the G2 reticle. I zero at 100 yards, and thats it for touching knobs. Using holds instead of dialing makes transitions between targets at varying distances extremely fast and intuitive, which is IMHO really what the SPR concept is about. The G2 reticle is a perfect compliment to the capabilities of the SPR rifle.



I just wish they could make it in a scope that weighed less than 24 ounces (really my only compaint with this scope).



My second pick for an SPR would probably be the new 2.5-10X32 PST scope. Definitely liking that reticle and level of magnification in a compact 18 ounce scope.

No, FFP is more of a secondary feature for me. It would be nice to have but it won't make or break my decision.

I think you should go to a slightly small scope, something in the 2-10 range.
I really like my vortex pst for my sprish build.

Despite being an SWFA fan, if my choice was between the Vortex PST 4-16x50mm FFP vs the SWFA 3-15x42mm FFP... I'd go Vortex PST... it is the more complete package if bought at the same price.

No, you don't really need parallax adjustment with 10 power or less scopes.

Ok I did some research and I've been reading some good things about the Sightron 3.5-10x44. Specifically the MOA/MOA model. How does the Sightron compare with the Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44?

Vortex has two models of the 2.5-10x scope... so you have options if you want side parallax.

An earlier model with a 44mm objective

I like the new 2.5-10x32 a lot from a size/weight standpoint. Great option if you are trying to save some weight and bulk on top of the rifle from larger optics. I think that's a good fit for an SPR, Ive been tempted to put it on my RECCE rifle but I don't want to loose the 1x bottom end on my SWFA 1-6x FFP scope not to mention the fantastic optical clarity on the SWFA scope.

That said the Vortex 2.5-10x32 weighs less than the SWFA HD 1-6x... 18.7oz vs 22.4oz
