Depends on what you consider affordable... But AKs more than ARs you can find for semi-decent prices.

Smith and Wesson M&P 15 sport is a great AR. They can still be had under $800 if you look hard enough.

            M&P Sport MSRP at $839 - http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/w...layErrorView_Y

            Several Del-ton models MSRP under 1k - http://www.del-ton.com/carbine_rifles_s/2.htm

several of these DPMS are sub 1k MSRP models - http://www.dpmsinc.com/223-REM-556-N..._ep_189-1.html

also, windham weaponry has a carbon fiber model sub 1k - http://www.windhamweaponry.com/content_rifles.asp

not to mention, all these companies offer rifles barely over $1,000.

That's exactly what im looking for, sub $1000. Thanks for the links and I will start researching there. Im just not very educated on the brands and really not looking to build one.

You could build either for 1k if you are good at hunting. Of course you can get a wasr, saiga, dti or mp15 sport for under 1k too, you wont win any tacticiol cork Sniffer contests, but they will work just fine.

Remember that you get what you pay for. Speaking for myself, I wouldn't buy an AR or AK just to HAVE one because its the hot new trend and everyone else is doing it and you want to be apart of the club. However if any of that IS true, then buy / build / assemble something that is a good balance of quality and practicality.

do you need a 56" rail (obvious exaggeration) with alternating rail covers, a bipod, a foregrip, night vision? Possibly, but more than likely not. HOWEVER you would probably appreciate something more than a "pencil barrel" and some of the nicer ergonomic furniture available.

As Arkangel said. I believe build / assembling is the way to go. you'll save yourself more money in the long run and won't have to upgrade as much.

If you wait and search, Saigas of most varieties can be found for 700-800ish. They're pretty scarce (as is everything else) right now though. As previously stated, you'll get more bang for your buck if you build an AR.

Building makes your money go farther.

Taxes are going to take a big chunk of money if you buy a complete gun. 1st, there's CA Sales Tax, and 2nd there's the Federal Tax on firearms. You pay the tax when you buy a complete firearm, or a Lower (considered to be a firearm). There is no Federal Tax on parts, and you don't pay the tax on parts not sold on the same receipt as a Stripped Lower. So, buy a Lower as one transaction, and buy the other parts as a different transaction.

So, buy a Stripped Lower, from a Local Dealer (you will pay CA Sales Tax and Federal Tax on it).

Order a Lower Build Kit and Assembled Upper from Out of State. Then, you don't pay State Sales Tax (saving 9-10%), and you don't pay the Federal Tax on the rest of the gun.

Even if you were to buy a complete gun from an Out of State Dealer, the FFL you use is required to collect the CA State Sales Tax. An Out Of State Dealer will collect the Federal Tax attached to a complete gun (or even a Stripped Lower).

Trying to buy a budget gun, how could you not consider the cost savings of building?

In the AR world you could probably build a base rifle for around $700.00 using an 80% poly reciever, maybe less if quality isn't too big of a factor. You can buy a commercial AK for under $700.

Keep an eye on the weekly Turners ad since you're basically in SoCal. They have had more and more availablity on rifles. Some prices have been OK, others, not so much.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Heh, I might buy an LWRC, but, putting them together myself is pretty satisfying.
