    question re: ak flats

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm trying to get my ducks in a row for an upcoming AK build

Obviously buying a flat, its not a "weapon"...just like an 80% ar paperweight...

My question is this, once it is bent, does it now become a "weapon" just like milling out the pockets on the AR blanks? I'm trying to see if it might be best to get a couple blanks now, have them bent, and own the "weapons" before any wacky laws go into effect and then build the ak's from parts kits later on.

    thoughts?

I believe any work that takes the receiver past '80%' makes it a firearm.

I guess What is considered 80% for an AK then...putting in the cross member supports? just bending the flat? It's pretty easy for 80% on AR's

Once you bend a AKbuilder flat you have manufactured a firearm. There are other various 80% pre bent receivers on the market missing specific holes being drilled, that once completed would put it into the same category as a bent flat.

I don't think it's a bad idea to have some flats bent if you want to own some home built AK's. But I also don't know the specifics behind the laws and how they will effect home builders yet. I'm not sure anybody does

A bent flat = a firearm. But you would have no way of proving that you bent it before the ban. So it really wouldn't get you anywhere legally. Unless... you bent them, stamped a serial number on them on voluntarily registered them. But why on earth would you do this?

If you want to stock up on pre bans, buy 100%. But as AKSOG said, who knows how many of these laws will go through and what they will do to self built guns.

A flat with all the fire control holes is just a piece of sheetmetal.
A bent flat without any of the fire control holes is just a piece of steel channel.
A bent flat with fire control holes in it is a firearm.

Thanks! This is what I needed to know. So a flat with holes cut in it once bent is the firearm. Perfect.
