    AK build party SF BAY AREA??

    This post may be in the wrong place but I was trying to see if there are any build parties coming up in the bay area. I'm looking to buy an AKM parts kit with populated barrel and a blank and wanted to see if there are any parties to go to before the PRK bans stuff.

      Sounds good. I assume people have the drilling templates and the tools to set rivets? I don't have those tools, so I'd need to go somewhere that does.

        Save yourself the headache and buy a flat from ak builder instead of the blank

            so you guys are saying this:

            AK47 7.62 receiver flat with pre-punched trunnion holes and bolt guide rails for simplified assembly. Made from 4130 annealed steel, 1mm thick, and 922r compliant.


            instead of this:

            I can get a polish blank with all the innards for pretty cheap...

            Can you enlighten me as to why a flat vs blank?

              Time. You can have a flat further along in 5 mins then it would take to get a prebent to the same spot in a build. (Hours)

                  Nodaks are 100% receivers and require ffl, dros, and 10 day wait. Faster to build but more expensive.

                    Yeah, I dont want to mess wtih FFL, etc...kinda defeats the whole purpose in my mind.

                        I heeded Nicoroshi's advice in preparation for my first build, and bought a few flats from AK builder. The Henderson Defense 80% I originally bought will go into a box to be used at a much later date - maybe, if I ever get around to it. Though I've never built an AK yet, I know others are absolutely right that flats save time.

                        Check the gunsmithing forum, or the services offered/wanted forum. That's where I've been checking for a local build party lately. Count me in for a Norcal build party too.

                          So if you build yourself out of a flat. Does it have serial number and is it legal?
                          I am sure these are stupid questions. But I gotta ask.

                            So i guess if I'm going the flat route, I'll for sure need a build party and/or an individual who has the bending dies and can show me how to do it. I also don't have a spot welder for the rail attachment :/

                              Nodaks are fully heat treated. Flats get spot treated. I have never had an issue with spot treating and I have helped/built at least 50 ak's with no issues with spot heat treating.
