So I was out in the sticks this weekend trying out a new muzzle device and a new to me lube technique. To set the stage I was using a bone stock M&P-15 except for the new brake.
The brake I was testing this weekend was something that I found on Amazon for 25 bucks. Product title was AR-15 .223 1/2x28 Competition Short Muzzle Device Brake by GRG Manufacturing. I bought it figuring it was cheap enough to try and if I hated it i could sell it and get most of my $ back. I'll start by saying that I did not want one to "tame" ar recoil. I'm a plenty decent shot w/out any brake to begin with, but I wanted it for quick follow up shots. The brake is a 3 baffle with 2 drilled ports on the top to reduce muzzle climb as well. It is kind of a greyish black steel machined brake that is a tad on the heavy side, but not absurdly so. They could have taken a tad more care in cleaning up the machining edges, but that is my only complaint about it. As for shooting, All I can say is I am seriously impressed with its performance. I know there are over $100 name brand models that this obviously copies its looks from (which I have used before) and this one performs just as well as its JP Rifles counterpart. It definitely pushes a large blast wave to the sides and you get a decent fireball out the first port especially with the cheap russian ammo. It didn't seem to throw off my POI much, so that was a plus too. Allowed me to make very quick and precise doubletaps on the invading army of tree stumps and cans out in the woods. That being said, this is definitely a good brake for the money and hopefully amazon will start carrying them again. Last I checked they had pulled the listing from their website. All the reviews were positive though so it wasnt for lack of quality.
The above url is the same brake, just not from amazon
The other thing I was testing was the age old grease vs oil for AR's
I normally run my AR wet with TRIFLOW and it works just fine but has to be re-applied often. This trip I tried something new. I stripped off the triflow and lightly coated all moving surfaces of my AR with hightemp wheel bearing grease (red color). After a couple hundred rounds of wolf and herters ammo I inspected, thinking i would find gritty reddish black grease. Much to my surprise it all looked almost as good as when I put it in. My AR ran buttery smooth and I can't see any reason to not keep using it to lube up my action. All I have done is run a bore snake down it and will let the grease sit in there for another couple of range sessions before wiping out and inspecting. It definitely helped cut down the clacking of the BCG, thats for sure, and as long as it stays nice and bright red I don't think it can hurt anything really.
I will try to post up some pix of the brake here tomorrow for your viewing pleasure.
