    School me on 7.62x39 please

Just got a killer deal on a Norinco SKS and have never owned a 7.62 x 39.

I see alot of different ammo for sale, which ones are the ones to avoid ?

Seems like most are steel cased and or cored and mosty ranges wont let you shoot them, so Which ones for the range?

Also The mil surplus stuff from the gun shows, any good?

    Thanks in advance, Mike

The only mil-surplus that you can shoot is the yugo surplus. Sgammo and a few other site occasionally have de-milled surplus ammo that has the bullet replaced with a non-magnetic bullet to make it range-ok.

As with all surplus ammo, just remember to clean it right when u get home from the range due to the ammo being corrosive.

Yugo milsurp, Prvi Partizan, Fiocchi and most American-made (Federal/Winchester/Remington) are GTG @ Burro Cyn, Angeles, & Lytle Creek.

Avoid Tula, Wolf and Herters. As a general rule, Russian-made is not allowed locally except at Rahaugee's.

Rahaugees is a great facility, however, the pricey range fees quickly offset savings on cheap Russian ammo.

like he said, but if you buy the cheap steel cased ammo all you have to do is go to the desert or BLM land and have fun...

Steel core/bi-metal is also no bueno on BLM land. If by chance you get checked out by a roving sheriff or a ranger, good luck with that...risky IMHO.

I've shot Wolf/Tula twice at Lytle Creek. No questions asked. Surplus 7.62 x 54 on my mosin too. No problems.

It's 7.62x39. It's dirty, it's junk, it's fun as hell to shoot. It will ruin the throat in your chamber if you do not clean right away.

Most SKS shooters will say that their SKS will eat any round, but I have heard that Remington Brass does FTF from time to time. Be sure to clean your SKS ASAP after shooting corrosive.

Best of Luck! I bought mine last year and lucky to find bulk rounds before the prices went through the roof.

Unfortunately, since you're in Socal, I know that Steel is NOT allowed to shoot.

I’ve heard the same thing from a BLM rangers... it has more to do with fire danger than anything else. In general if it sparks when it hits steel or rocks, it’s a no go.

Now it doesn’t explicitly say bi-metal bullets… but they do have steel in the projectile.

Milsurp 762x39 is not steel core generally. Law speaks in specifics.

Which is why I edited to add “Now it doesn’t explicitly say bi-metal bullets… but they do have steel in the projectile” Referring to Tula/Wolf

I know people still shoot it out there… but I would personally be a little more careful around brush areas. I don’t want to be the guy to start a fire, and it has happened. I like my BLM land, last thing I want to see is more restrictions or risk of closure to shooting.
