Its a different chrome plating process than dads old 57' Chevy bumper. Ive read its a much more heavy duty process involved and using Hoppes wont do anything to the chrome but clean it

Hoppes #9 just does not work as well since they removed the cancer causing ingredient benzene. I use Kroil for most of my gun cleaning now.

Last year I bought a Hoppe's #9 hanging car air freshener from my LGS. Hoppe's has new one out that is supposed to be good and less toxic. It just won't have that familiar comforting smell of old #9. I cleaned a gun once in the kitchen with #9, guess what my Wife's reaction to that was

Just don't over clean. Zealous barrel over cleaning will damage the life of your barrel, be diligent about the care of your rifle but not obsessive. Two or even one run with a boresnake is sufficient.
