    22LR Conversion kits and cleaning

I picked a Colt Conversion kit years ago for my HBAR Sporter (which "isn't" anymore, since I went through the REALLY annoying process of making it CA-legal and shipped it out here - effing Colt with the pins all different sizes etc etc) - basically a bolt carrier and a magazine - and I've never used it. I want to start doing so to cut down on practice costs. I had a discussion with someone recently and they noted two big disadvantages to using this over a dedicated .22 AR:

    - magazines are hard to come by, and ridiculously expensive
    - cleaning is a much bigger pain in the ***.

He specifically mentioned that the gas tube gets badly fouled and takes a lot of work to clean out.

Can anyone speak to this, and what needs to be done to keep it functioning well when shooting rimfire ammo?

Everyone will say gas tubes are self cleaning. Once you shoot some 223/556 it will blast any powder build up away.

I haven't seen magazines to be hard to find. Black dog (which are the most popular) had a bunch in stock last week, and the other ones that weren't in stock said ETA 5/25/13. Usually around 20$

The lower receiver internals will get more unburnt powder build up then normal. I just use a can of break free powder blast and completely blast it away and let dry. Takes like 10 seconds. Then do a coat of whatever lube you normally use.

Nothing really different as far as cleaning. It just gets dirty 10xs quicker so you gotta clean it sooner.
