do you want Saiga barrel threaded?

I'm trying to decide whether to by the threading tool or pay a smith to do it. Is anyone in the Roseville area interested in chipping in for the tool and using it?

It's not that hard to do. It just takes time and patience. There are videos out there that show you exactly how to do it. As always though, you have to do at your own risk because screwing it up can perm damage your barrel.

I hope this will help someone. Thanks to very helpful fellow member Indyarms I was able to rent a kit for threading the barrels on my .223 and 7.62 Saigas. I will describe here exactly what I did for those who are interested in threading their own barrels. Follow these directions at your own risk...

You need to change the front sight base to add a 74 brake.

I just watched the videos and bought most of the parts, just need a .223 TAT and maybe a vice for my bench.

This is wrong. You don't need to change it. You just only thread the barrel down to a certain depth and use a crush washer like an AR. It looks a tad strange but it works. You dont need the pin to hold it on that way. OR you thread all the way down to the FSB and use a threaded nut to add proper spacing. you do NOT need to change FSB to use a 74 style brake.

I have seen some people cut off/recrown the end of the barrel to be more of hte appropriate AK length and then drill out the FSB for the brake retaining pin...another option

for example..look at those different brakes...some say how deep the threads are in them, if you know how deep your threads are, you just thread your barrel for the same length and BAM good to go.

AK 74 brakes come in 22X1.5mm for the Romy and 24X1.5mm for Russian, and Bulgarian. There has never been a AK 74 brake that threads onto the barrel. Now Tapco has a cheap knock off that looks like a 74 brake that threads onto a 14X1LH but that has none of the benefits of the actual 74 brake.

wait, what? sorry, haven't done much research on AK platform. Soooo...looks like the whole FSB shrouds over the barrel.

do you thread the FSB shroud? or do i take the whole FSB off, and pray that it came pre-threaded (some of the Saiga's i've heard of came with threaded barrels).

or take the FSB off and (if no threads) thread the barrel?

which way is good to go for, to retain functional brake?

i'd prefer NOT to cut my barrel and recrown.

No, you have to cut off the shroud with either a pipe cutter or dremel. once the shroud is off, the barrel underneath is exposed and thats what you thread. You do not have to take off the FSB. Most saigas in recent memory are not threaded under the shroud.

Theres a way to check if your barrel is threaded. I'll link my thread when I'm not on my phone.
You'll need to cut the foreskin off the fsb in order to thread the muzzle. That's if you want 14X1 LH threads.
If you want a 74 brake, then the fsb gets changed out. I cannot tell you what a difference a real 74 brake does to kill recoil.

Why do people keep saying this?! It is absolutely not true. You thread the barrel to the depth of the brake, and add a crush washer. Even some locktite if you're really worried. You dont need the retaining pin if you do that.

thanks both for the quick replies. sounds like replacing the FSB with AK74 brake would be simpler...although, i'd probably have someone do it...i'm around SJ area
