Right now, there is no more you can get away with in California than what you get with the M1A. If you do end up having to register it next year or something, you will be doing so without a BB. With an AR, it's already got it on there. In all honesty, I can't recommend the M1A enough. AR's are a dime a dozen. Be different.

i went threw AR overload a long time ago, the gun industry saw how much crap people will buy for them and went full speed ahead. i am sure i am in a minority but this whole AR play army, swat, rambo thing is not why i own guns. yes the AR is a great gun ,i just do not want one. most of the gun shows on TV today are nothing more than infomercials.
i did find a nice like new 1983 Springfield M1A and bought it. my son in law bought a del ton AR and i did shoot it one time because his feelings would be hurt if i did not shoot it and say nice things about it. i carried a M 16 in the army in viet nam in 1968-69 so i should have a strong feeling toward the M 16 but i do not. we used M 14s in basic training and i thought it was a better rifle for sure.

I say buy what ever you want. The prices are starting to drop a little already.A local shop at Sig 716 at almost pre panic prices.I have several of the .308 battle rifles.Including the M-1A's and the .308 AR's.The .308 AR's rifles tend to be more accurate out of the box, more easy to shoot then the M-1 rifles. That is my 2cents.

I prefer the M1A types, especially for CA. Not having to deal with a bullet button is great. Plus, aesthetically I prefer the M1A anyways. I shoot primarily iron sights, which is where they shine. If you have legal 20 round magazines stashed away somewhere, you can use them with the M1A.

Well, people keep drawing their lines in the sand, then backing up as the State keeps dinking away at our freedoms in regards to firearms.

Today it's 10-round magazines, bullet buttons, and flash suppressors; tomorrow it's detachable magazines at all, muzzle devices of any kind, whatever.

If you want to end up with a legal semiautomatic rifle in .308 for the longest term possible, go with an M1 Garand--it doesn't even have a detachable magazine. Even then you'll probably have to grind off the bayonet lug in the not-too-distant future and purchase reduced-capacity enbloc clips.

My opinion is that the State doesn't actually care about magazine capacity, how fast your rifle shoots, or really any feature at all. Rather, each election cycle politicians want to be able to demonstrate their anti-gun credentials by having a new bill to support.

The Constitution is ultimately only meaningful anymore for scoring points in political debate. Both sides are willing to chip away at it, whether it's liberals supporting executive orders to weaken the second amendment or conservatives supporting executive orders to start wars congress hasn't declared. People are just fine with house-to-house searches and no immediate reading of Miranda rights if it's the Boston marathon bombers in question. Eventually we'll just have the interstate commerce and general welfare clauses, creatively defined.

I guess I would go AR10. Well that's what I built but it was before all the panic. I would still like a M1A but not willing to pay a stupid price.

My LGS had M&P 308s this week for about $1600. About $500 more than I paid to build one(a lot of DPMS parts) 6 months ago but at least they are available.

When I live din Arizona and had no concerns over mags or buttons of any kind, I had both. Never shot the AR-10, did shoot the M1A. I liked it better even though there was no bb on the AR-10.

I was torn between the two. I went with the M1a. Liked shooting the iron sites better and enjoyed the lack of bb.
