    Tacti-coolish or tacti-foolish?

you know, im not sure if this belongs here or not, but i kinda felt the urge to comment on the "put up or shut up" thing. this would be considered a sidebar i guess. anyways, im at chabot this morning and i see these three guys all huddled around two benches. nothing unusal. ones got an AR. i start setting up a few benches down kinda chuckling because two of them are wearing BDU lowers, maybe even ALICE suspenders. i look a bit closer and one has on either 1) camo body armor or 2) one of those modular MOLLE vests. i guess some people are really into that kinda stuff. it just seems a bit overkill for the range. 1) the war aint here man 2) must be some sort of compenstation-thing just like guys who put huge lifts on their trucks

There was three guys like that out at hodge road yesterday. One was wearing this super tac almost bulletproof looking thing. We were going to go just down the raod from them shooting into the same hill when as we were setting up we kept hearing bullets whiz by. We were like what the hell are you guys doing - its almost like they were trying to shoot at us. Pretty damn scary

I will say that I tend to wear soft body armor to the range. I don't do molle gear or whatnot, and most folks can't even tell I'm wearing it. For me, it's not from some thought that I'm going to get into some kind of shootout. I have two points:

        1. Every now and then, there's an idiot at the range. Most idiots waving guns around do so with handguns. When young guys take girls to the range to impress them, every now and then you get one that doesn't get the idea that fanning isn't cool. And on one occasion, I got the chance to stare down the barrel of a 9mm and could see the chambered HP round in it. Some guy had asked his girl a question, and she turned around to answer... that isn't what almost got me killed. What almost got me killed was when he saw it and body-tackled her with her finger on the trigger. Now, a vest wouldn't have changed that any, but a torso counterpart could always happen.

        2. If someone DOES have a negligent discharge, and I get hit, I would really rather that I not get seriously hurt. For one thing, gun owners in CA are an endangered species, and if I get by without injuries, I'd be happy not to press charges and settle for them buying me a new vest. Unless the person is a total jerk, in which case I'd press charges, they'd probably never make a mistake like that again.

        3. Were SHTF to ever happen, I'd be wearing my armor a lot. I also throw it on during the one or two times a year I hear weird noises (usually turns out to be a cat). It just makes sense to be used to practicing in it, so that it's not one more thing on your mind in an actual situation.

Now, those are my reasons for body armor at the range. I don't deny that there's a lot of mall ninjas out there, and a good number of them are just looking for attention. They sell concealable armor for a reason.

if you are curious what they were doing, just go over to barf.com and search for "chabot" and "tactical", I am sure they are critiquing each other and everybody else right now.

I see nothing wrong with it. I wear a chest rig when I run my AR at the range. I would wear a tricked out MOLLE plate carrier but I can't afford one. Train like you fight...

yeah, they might have been there for that. then again, from ~10-11:30am, i was one of about five people on the entire range. besides, do BDUs and vests really enhance your performance? i think thats kinda along the lines of putting a lot of racing stickers on your civic

Its happen to me also at the range.. i turn around only to find a gun being pointed in our direction. Infact it happend a few times that day from the group of ppl sharing the range that day at HB police range.

needless to say we were all pretty pissed. Surprisingly it was a group of Marines requalifiying...yikes.

So let me get this straight...... Marines drove all the way up from Camp Pendleton (where the ranges are) to Huntington Beach to re-qualify on their weapons?

Care to elaborate on that? What were they shooting? Were they in uniform w/ gear?

I am just curious, because it strikes me as odd.

bah! "compensation with lifts on trucks..." man i personally think that a truck stock doesnt look that good, most have low ground clearance, tires that arent made for any offroad use, bad suspesion and just overally look disproportionate - huge body tiny little wheels. they look a lot better and have a much more pleasant stance with good lift and good tires.

saying something like that is complete BS dude, it is like saying everyone that owns a gun is compensating for something, you know its BS

as far as wearing complete bdus to the range is kinda bad taste IMO, i rarely wear some flec camo pants because they dont show dirt when i go get some food afterwards, i use them for paintball and other outdoor activities as well. but whatever some people really have money to dump, why not let them?

leo, you gotta point. some people do just like to hot rod or supe up there trucks just like some of us and our guns. im talking about the dude with the f-350 diesel with dualies, a lift, and chrome-flame grill. esp when i see it driving around some upscale shopping district. i always get a laugh outta that. and the gunworld parallel would be that thread with the pic showing that AR with like 40lbs of nightvision/low light gear on it. cmon! if wearing BDUs and body armor and tac vests to the range is your thing, so be it. youre ready for war at the docile range.

For the scenario you described above, I'd label it "tacti-foolish".

You generally won't see the guys who have a reason to own/use the tactical gear in the first place.

                              Think "Quiet Professional".
