    I Need Help w/ AR15 Barrel! Anyone?

    Hello,

    I am New to the AR15 field and recently purchased a Yankee Hill (YHM-15) lower. I have the following upper, which I will attach to the lower. Can anyone attest to the quality of Yankee Hill barrels?

    Here is some info on the upper:

    YHM is very pleased to offer our flagship Black Diamond Specter Top End. The Diamond forearm bridges the gap between the upper receiver and hand guard and is marked for position on all 4 sides. YHM's diamond pattern in the hand guard reduces weight and blends perfectly with our diamond fluted barrels.

    Features Include:
    * Forged 7075-T6 Aluminum YHM Flat Top Upper Receiver
    * "T" Marked Upper Receiver
    * Forward Assist
    * 16" 4140 Steel Barrel, Heat Treated to RC 25-32
    * Chambered in 5.56 N.A.T.O. with either a 1:9" or 1:7" Twist ( I Chose 1:7 twist)
    * YHM Diamond Fluting Improves Rigidity and Aids in Barrel Cooling
    * YHM Phantom 5C2 Flash Hider / Compensator (YHM-28-5C2)
    * YHM Specter Length Diamond Handguard (YHM-9637-DX)
    * YHM Forearm Endcap (YHM-9484-A)
    * YHM Low Profile Gas Block (YHM-9384)
    * YHM Forearm Mounted Flip Front Sight (YHM-9627)
    * YHM Flip Rear Sight (YHM-9680)
    Total Weight: 4.8 Pounds

    Thank You,
    Mr Chubby McLard

    Not sure what you're asking. I'm sure it's going to fit, i'm pretty sure it will shoot. Yankee Hill makes good stuff. If you already have a Yankee lower, I'm sure a Yankee upper is going to be just fine too.

      Yes, you did fine choosing YHM, and also choosing the 1:7 barrel. Generally, but not always, a matched outfit brings a bit more resale value too.
      You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

        I was told their barrels suck. I hope not.

          I've been told mid grade. Not the best not the worst but will shoot just fine. Good thing is....you can always replace the barrel if needed.

            I have that same upper on my carbine. Have hade zero issues and its a tack driver. I have had it for 3+ years with over 1000 rounds through it.

              well they aren't match grade barrels but also aren't as expensive either. for regular shooting/plinking/training whatever they will be just fine. 1-7" is good for heavier bullets and most people like that twist rate bc it's best all around.

                +1

                Mid grade barrel with a decent price tag well suited for the quoted applications.

                That was pretty much my understanding when I was doing my barrel shopping / research.

                I ended up going a different route for my application, and it is application that should help define what type of barrel you should purchase.

                  Define tac driver?

                  What are your groups like with this barrel? What type of ammo did you use?

                    What exactly is the difference between this Yankee Hill barrel and a match grade barrel? Can I go to war with a non-match grade barrel? Lol

                      The difference will be in the machining quality, barrel material and plating or non-plated. Match grade = different material, better machining work and probably won't have a chrome lined bore. For plinking and a SHTF rifle, it won't make a difference to the average shooter.

                        Don't worry, you probably won't notice the difference between a match grade barrel and the one you have. Most shooters aren't good enough (me included) to have to worry about that kind of accuracy. If you plan on competing, then you need to upgrade to better barrel, but if this is a range gun for plinking then you are GTG. It will most likely be more accurate than you are.

                          Yes... but thats not the point. Like I said its an application thing...

                          Both my match barrels I use for long distance target and shooting groups at 100-200 yards.

                          I'm no expert, but both my match barrels came from manufactures with a well known reputation for making match barrels, I don't really question what it is they do different but its pretty much what Bhobbs mentioned... both are 416 stainless steel, one a bull barrel and the other a heavy profile, and I believe have a .223 wylde chamber... Next one on my list will be from JP...

                          I have other uppers which are chrome lined / CHF for my fun guns which are built more like a typical CQB / run and gun type of setup... I could really care less if that rifle was able to print less than 1 MOA, and I dont shoot anything but plinking ammo through them.

                          I just use them for different type of shooting.

                          And just because you use a match barrel doesn't mean its going to perform the way you may envision it... its only part of the equation. I still have to pair it with match ammo or a good hand load to really achieve the types of results I want. Using M193 or plinking ammo doesn't really yield much better results than what could be had with a standard chrome lined barrel at times... if anything its a marginal improvement at best.

                            I used one of there 20" barrels in a build. Only shot 75gr 223 out of it. Would do under 1" groups at 100 and last time out with it i was tagging a 2'x1' steel plate at 830 yards 6 out of 10 shots.

                              I would be really happy with those results...

                              Just goes to show that most of the performance is generally achieved from finding the right loading or ammo for the rifle and looks like the YHM barrels are up to the task.

                              OP... go shoot it, and enjoy
