Just curious as to what you guys think the shelf life is on a box of ammo. I like to buy in bulk but not sure how long it is safe to store it. I have some that is 2 years old. Is that too long? Thanks.

Give it to your grandchildren and it should go bang just fine for them."Ecuador offers the United States $23 million a year in economic aid, an amount similar to what we were receiving under the tariff benefits, with the purpose of providing human rights training that will contribute to avoid violations of people's privacy, that degrade humanity," --Fernando AlvaradoComment

Within the past year, I have fired a couple hundred rounds of 18 to 20 year old ammo (.45 acp, 9mm and .22 LR) stored in my safe. My desiccant must have died 15 years ago. They all looked good and went boom.
On a side note, it's sad seeing the cheap prices posted on those old ammo boxes!Comment

Most answers are pretty accurate.
Cool and dry is the key. I store in ammo cans or other airtight cans with dessicant. I do wonder though never heard about oxygen absorbers in ammo storage.... Though thats probably overboard.
Once in a while you read an article about someone shooting off ammo from pre WWII- sometimes even pre 1900 ammo. It usually still goes bang.
Really old stuff like pre 1900, you often read that some of them didnt fire, but most do. Figure modern components and practices are far better....
It really isnt something to worry about for most people.
Be aware that heat can affect the powder, and they will usually be underpowered, and moisture (or oil) can ruin a primer over time. Those are the main concerns for long term storage.
2 yr old ammo.... wouldnt bat an eye. Its fine.Comment

It all depends on storage climate. Cool and dry and ammo will last a loooooong time, say 25 to 50 years or more. Though remember, technology changes, so the powder and bullet technology we have today is in many respects better than stuff available 20 years ago.
Figure what you want on hand and how much you shoot per year and just rotate out the old stufff and replace with the new stuff, and repeat each year. Having a stash of 3 to 5 years of shooting supply on hand at any given time is a starting point.
The benefit of a big stash is it will give folks something to talk about if your home gets raided for an over due library book. LEOs and the press love to talk about how many rounds you have on hand.Benefactor Life Member, National Rifle Association
