    Time for a new rifle

I'm in the market for a new rifle. It will be used primarily for knocking down the metal animals at the Sac Valley member range. For those that aren't familiar, it's a massive range filled with metal animals just like Hickok45's compound with chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams. The only restriction is no Magnum rounds on this range.

My AR won't knock down the rams at 500 meters so I just want something to knock these animals down since my brother will be pounding them down next to me with his .308.

Optimally I want a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 or 30-06 but wondering if I can do it on a budget. I don't need a sub-MOA sniper rifle as this rifle isn't going to take game or be required to make super tight groups at 1000 yards. However, I do want to be able to put a decent number of rounds through it without it hammering my shoulder into submission or having to wait for the barrel to cool down.

What do you say? M1 Garand, Ruger American, Stevens 200, save for the Rem 700? What about a Mosin Nagant?

The cool and fun factor of a M1 is hard to argue with

Still think you would have more fun with the garand, the cmp garands are really good quality and can be had easily and for a great price. get em while they still have em!

I'm thinking about a mosin myself but I don't fully see the appeal over a different bolt action

M1A would definitely do the job. Garand too but last I checked, 30-06 ammo has always been on the expensive side.

Rem 700 in any variation is always a good value and easy to resell once you get tired of them.

Mosin is probably by far the best bang for the buck, until surplus ammo supply dry up. It is entirely capable of reaching out and touching something.

Skip the m1a and get the m1. A third of the price, cheaper ammo, genuine usgi weapon, only two rounds less capacity, and clips are $1 vs $40 magazines.

M1 Garand. If you are looking for a bolt action, take a look at the Howa 1500. It's a great rifle with a great price. They are the same rifle as the Weatherby Vanguard only a different name stamped on them. I have one in 30-06 and it's a tack driver.

Since you mentioned the Mosin Nagant I assume you are referring to the Military Silhouette match held every third Saturday of each month. For open sights it will be hard (but fun) to shoot the Mosin. However, you can not use the mil surp ammo because of the steel restrictions (they have had fires break out at the range in the past because of it). Just about any standard Military surplus rifle will work but if you want to compete it is hard to beat the Swedish Mausers. The 6.5 mm round is just big enough to knock over the Rams and is the best at bucking the wind. If you are going to scope the Mosin then you have a chance. You will have to learn how to read the wind and call the wind as a spotter for your partner.

Try hitting the ram with an 80gr slug out of the AR. I don't know if it will work but it might.
