SKS VS SVT40
I wanted to invent an engine that could run for ever. I could have developed a new train, had I stayed in the railway. It would have looked like the AK-47 though. MIKHAIL KALASHNIKOVTags: None -
I remember when an sks was a $75 poor man's deer rifle. SVT-40 never got that way in the US...though they are fairly inexpensive in Canada. SVT-40 because of its relative scarcity as well as its direct historical connection to ww2 trumps the sks for me. of course this is purely emotion-based "reasoning" on my part.SPC ret'd -
Both are ultra rugged semi-autos.
SVT has more power and range with the 7.62x54r cartridge, but mags are hard to find.
SKS is not as accurate and almost as heavy.
Now that you own the harder to find one, find it a stable mate.Comment

Ya I love the SVT cuz of its history, simplicity, aggressive looks and the x54r. Its just a more desirable rifle than the SKS, if you get an SVT you hold onto it, if you get an SKS you can sell it and easily find another one. But! I think the SKS is also awesome and can definitely take down something big.I wanted to invent an engine that could run for ever. I could have developed a new train, had I stayed in the railway. Svt is a bad mamajama. Only downside IMO is if you need replacement parts it will be rough. The California Moderate Centrist Militia member in exile

I have an SKS, it's been a great gun. They are a lot of fun to shoot and always seem to work. I would love to have an SVT40 but they are a bit out of the price range I want to pay. I guess they can be quite a chore to clean too, but that's how you get to know your rifle better!

From my experience, both are cool weapons, shoot well, and have historical significance. That said, the SVT would not fit in the ultra rugged or super reliable category for me. Personally, I've never had any problems with my SVT, but even the Solviet troops complained on the less than rugged nature of the SVT. By contrast, put he SVT along side a M1 Garand, and you will see my point.
Again, not bashing the SVT as it has total coolness for me and I love shooting it at the range. That said, it would not be my first choice for a rifle if I could only have one rifle.
By contrast, if I could only have one rifle, the SKS would be in contention for me. The SKS is rugged, accurate enough, handy, snd shoots an available and performing caliber.
I guess it really boils down to what you want to do with it. Adding another historical range price to the collection, or having that all purpose, do everything firearm.Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. i think the adjustable gas system was a bit much for some people to understand, as well as it is with a FAL... people usually want to pick it up, point it and shoot without thinking much about it, if you take the time to tune it, it is amazing.
personally SVT is my fav WWII rifle of all and i also own one
if adjusted properly the recoil is about the same as an SKS but the round is much more powerful, the mag availability def sucks...
i shot a few thousand rounds through mine with crappy surp ammo and it never jammed (i did slamfire once with winchester stuff but i blame soft primers)
OT but i saw a video about FAL reliability were some dude put it through mud sand etc and it failed to cycle cuz he didnt even look gas adjustment. his verdict was the FAL was unreliable compared to an AK - i think that it can do just as well if it is used by someone who knows how to use it properlyComment
