    AR15 Safety Function Check issues

Put my RRA kit in, and went through the safety function check, but I think something may be wrong...

"Without releasing the trigger, push the hammer back again and verify that it locks (caught by disconnector)."

this does not happen. hammer will cock back, trigger actuates hammer, but if I don not release the trigger, and pull the hammer back, it does not catch. Should it?

    What am I doing wrong?

I'm not quite following your question..

You are supposed to have the hammer cocked, pull the trigger to release it, then hold the trigger in the rearmost position. Manually re-cock the hammer and it (hammer) should catch on the disconnect. Releasing pressure on the trigger will release the hammer from the disconnect, but the hammer SHOULD NOT FALL, it should now have the sear surface of the hammer and trigger against each other. To make the hammer fall, pull the trigger rearward again.

ETA: check to make sure your disconnect is installed facing the correct way, and that the disconnect spring is properly installed.

No need, if you hold the trigger to the rear, and the hammer does not catch when you push it all the way back, then something is wrong.

As Leelaw wrote: Is the disconnector spring in place and right side (pointy end) up? people seem to be having trouble with this part lately.
If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

Yes, it should catch when you do that, as you expect.

I think I know the problem... Have you installed your safety (aka selector in full-auto weapons) yet? I bet you haven't, have you?

Install the safety, and then your trigger will work the way you expect it to.

I did the same thing, just like you. Thought I had a problem. The procedure is described incorrectly (wrong sequencing) in the instructions they give you over at arfcom.

They tell you to function-check the trigger immediately after installing it, and before you install the safety. But it won't function-check correctly until you install the safety.

When doing a function check, is there a safe way to drop the hammer without damaging the receiver (other than easing it down with your hand)?

I had the same problem with the first one that I built. I had ended up switching the hammer spring and the trigger spring. The heavier of the 2 springs goes on the hammer, the lighter on the trigger. Hope this helps

I wrap the receiver with a rag and make sure it's nice and wadded right at the bolt catch.

Or if you want, this is a nice option from ADCO Firearms

Well, I feel like a turd. I went to check it right now (after a bit more sleep than last night when I put it together), and it functions as it should. I wasn't pressing the hammer back down hard enough to catch. It is doing what is is suppose to.

Aside from that, the build was easy as pie, thanks to a company called RBPrecision. I will get flamed for taking the easy route, but they do a "pre-assembly" of sorts, seperating the RRA kits into different bags and such so it is easier to identify. They also put the trigger springs and such on and provide plenty of extra springs and detents (two sets went flying...thank God they included a ton of extras). No extra charge, and they were really nice. Next time I will build from the ground up for the experience, but being really lame with stuff like this, I was glad this option was available.

I got what I could from Wes, and recommend you patronize him, but for easy LPK's and stuff Wes doesn't have, I can't reccomend RBPrecision.com enough.

Function check should be done after full assembly with safety selector installed: does the hammer drop with the safety engaged?

Everything was finished when I tested, though. So anyone who may have the same "scare"...press harder numbnuts!
