    Higher Quality OLL's

Is there such an amimal? I'm thinking of picking up a stripped OLL. Are there better brands out there? Brands to avoid? Or are they all the same chunk of alloy?

I plan on spreading this build over months (or years ) and would like to start with the best quality I can afford.

    Thanks Guys!

MEGA has one of the nicest finishes/fits on the market. Check with the vendors here, they generally have lots of different brands to shop....

I just recently built my first one which was a Mega. Heard nothing but good things about them really, and it turned out great. Everyone says they're all the same though, unless its a Vulcan. Never have seen/touched a Vulcan in person so I couldnt comment. Others comments are enough to make me steer clear of them. Im about to pickup (3) Spikes lowers in the ARF.com group buy

POF would be a preimum lower receiver.

CMMG stripped lower & Armalite LPK w/ Tac 2-stage trigger. I'm on my 5th build now (and have done countless others for friends), and so far, this combo beats them all, IMO. (the only ones I don't have personal hands-on experience with are Colt & DPMS). Also, I'm pretty anal about putting together lowers (i.e.- always polish all roll pins / cover lower & tools with 2 layers of electrical tape to avoid marring anything / lube all pins;springs;detents;etc. (I use Mil-Comm TW-25B)

Don't worry about the lower receiver itself. Any decent brand will be good. Colt, DSA, LAR, etc.. Get a RRA LPK, get a grip and buttstock of your choice (I recommend the Magpul MIAD grip and the Vltor E-MOD but that's personal preference) If you want a good, DURABLE match trigger, get a Giessele. NOTHING else is as good, PERIOD. The Giessele SSA (non-adjustable) is $150.

Where you really want to spend good money is on the upper. Quality barrel, BCG, upper receiver, rail, sights, optics, etc..

people need to feel elite. what can you say? if they want to spend extra money on the same stuff, let them.

I wouldn't say elite. Some lowers are $99, some are $199, some are more. Seeing as the lower is the one part of the rifle I can't replace if I change my mind (due to serialization), why not sink a couple extra buck into it.

Sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes you don't. I'm just putting it out there so I can learn something.

From my experience and all the builds I have done, they are all the same. The only ones that could be considered "premium" lowers are the billet ones like the POF. Then it just depends on if that is your thing or not. I say buy the one that has the roll mark you like and call it a day.

Buy one of 10% special run lowers. They build up very well and you will be in an elite class because they are short runs and low serial numbers.

If you know what you're doing you could line up a whole bunch of lowers and find ones that are better than others from any brand. It's like the difference between a blueprinted engine and a stock engine. Anything mechanical has tolerances and the closer to the ideal lower the better.
