So, I find myself the new owner of a colt sporter ii upper, but the barrel shroud doesn't have any rails. How would one mount things to the upper in such a case? Are there aftermarket rails that go into some of the circular holes on the top/bottom/side of the shroud? Or....?

Duct tape. LOL
There are kits that will require you to drill and screw.
You could take it to an armourer and have him add rails to it or replace it with another hand guard that has rails. -
The easiest thing to do is replace the handguard."Everyone must determine for themselves what level of tyranny they are willing to tolerate.
