AK Bullet Button - Old Problem, New Problem

hello, I haven't been on here much since I moved to Oregon but I need a little info about California law, so here we go.

I bought my friend an Arsenal SGL-26 brand new and installed a "California Legal" bullet button and shipped it off to a FFL dealer in Nor-Cal yesterday. It will arrive tomorrow.

Today I talked to the shop owner that said he just got back from an ATF or DOJ seminar (can't remember which) and they told him that an AK bullet button has to be riveted on or otherwise not removable in any way. He claimed that it is illegal and that he won't accept the gun without first getting "permission" from the DOJ which he is going to call tomorrow. I explained that the AR button is not riveted in and I have never heard of this before. He said many gun shops in California are non-compliant to California law, and he can't risk losing his license.

Has anybody heard of this, or was the DOJ pulling his leg? Many of the pics I see on here have a button that is screwed on like the one I put on myself. We spent a lot of money and time getting him this gun and really want this to work out - any info is appreciated. Thanks ahead of time!

If that is the case every gun shop that sells black rifles is breaking the law. Riflegear, paralax tactical, you name it. I have not seen an AR mag lock that is permanently attached to the rifle, and the only AK mag lock that is riveted on is...I think the arsenal or maybe it's saiga. All others that i know of are bolt/screw on.

Replace the screws with pop rivets.

Remove the pistol grip. Problem solved.

No mods to this SGL other than the BB being added? Should be gtg with the PG removed, then he can transfer it to your buddy.

If the BB needs to be riveted, this is news to me! Your bud can also put a kydex wrap on the PG and drop the BB all together.

I'm also concerned this shop owner may pull some shady move... not uncommon, tbd what his angle is or if he is simply uninformed.

This is not true and there is no official DOJ regulation or position, nor any case law, that supports this. I wouldn't be surprised though if DOJ has people out spreading lies in order to confuse people. They have done it plenty of times before regarding AW's.

I think they were out telling stories just to screw with people. the shop owner finally got through to DOJ on the phone yesterday and whoever answered said it wasn't a problem. That seminar they attended was full of garbage.

                    ODG23,

You might look into to see if Arsenal makes a mag lever that's been shortened instead of the standard version. I had to trade my first IO Casar rifle due to oither issues and when I got the second the mag lever was shorter than the first.
