Why not use Replica (Airsoft) Magpul Accessories?

    Hi there:

I wonder.... as a civilian shooter who will sling as AR as a hunting rifle on a few 4- or 5-day weekends per year... why would I select the $26 Magpul RSA Sling Attachment Accessory instead of the $12 Magpul PTS "Replica" Sling Attachment Accessory?
    I appreciate your input.

Better stick with a complete airsoft gun just to be safe.

But seriously, the airsoft stuff are designed as toys.

Because dropping your $1,000 AR on a rock to save 14 bucks is kinda stupid.

Got this from a google search:

There are 3 different categories for Magpul Products for the AR15/Airsoft Platform.

        1. RS (Real Steel in the airsoft community) - These are the MOE or Magpul Original Equipment. They are the hardened and tested polycarbonate that are used on real rifles. These will hold up to the conditions your rifle will put them through.

        2. PTS - These accessories will still fit but are not made from the same polycarbonate material that the regular MOE stuff. These WILL fit on your AR15. The only thing that wouldn't recommend using would be the MBUS as they will not withstand the rifles recoil and you will lose your site. I've used the MOE PTS on my REAL AR15 before and it was fine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/primerx24/5…

        3. ACM (All China Made in the airsoft community) - Watch out for this category. They are the cheap chinese nock offs of the PTS and RS versions of Magpul products. While they MAY fit, they will soon break. Also they may be discolored and the tradmarks are misspelled. BE CAREFUL when buying "PTS" equipment, as it maybe ACM.

I don't for sure, but I would venture that the real RSA is a MIMS part made of steel and the cheapo may be cast aluminum or some other pot metal alloy.

              Call magpul and ask them.

Regardless, I wouldn't skimp $20 on something that might fail and allow your rifle to fall to the ground.

I had a acquaintance on Facebook once tell me I was stupid for buying an ACOG when I could "get the same exact thing" for 100 bucks from the airsoft store

I would not take a chance on the PTS sling adaptor, however I have both types of the AFG2 and the only difference I've found is the screw and bolt holding the two halves together is a bit smaller on the PTS and the bolt on the PTS comes off when the bolt is unscrewed. On the "real" AFG2, the nut stays put.

I use only the "real" magpul MBUS sight, I have not seen or tried the PTS version.
You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.

Range toy only? Sure, why not. Duty weapon. No.

Thanks Varg Vikernes for the practical advice. Of course I can google too, but I ask Calguns for a more practical take on product questions such as this. I have no problem using a generic stem on my mountain bike, no-name levers on my motorcycle, or Pick-n-Pull parts on my truck. In the end it's up to me to assess the item as reliable before I install. The stuff that makes these things go: bicycle bearings, clutch kits, engine parts, bolt carrier groups, optics mounts, no compromise. However really simply components? Why not? Truth be told an airsofter will use their Magpul Sling Attachment Accessory in a more rigorous fashion than I with my for-reals firearm, and their airsoft piece often isn't cheap and often weighs the same as my firearm. Seriously people, if you have practical experience with MOE vs. PTS components I'd love to hear your opinion.

apparently airsoft pellets are cheaper than 5.56. if you're trying to save money...
