AR barrel replacement? hard to do?

im thinking of changing out my plain ol' 16" HBAR for a trick looking fluted or M4-style barrel. is this something best left to a gunsmith or is this a fairly straight forward procedure someone with reasonable skills can do? ive found some info on the web, but those guides are all like "wam bam boom done." whats the truth?
it's a trick. get an axe.

The procedure is actually very simple, seriously but if you don't have the right tools it can become a nightmare!!! i.e. vise block, armorer wrench, etc...
IMO the most challenging part would be to take off the barrel nut. Some barrels nuts need a lot of elbow grease to come off.

Pretty much the truth. Replacing the barrel on AR is not very difficult. However, you will need to invest into tools first. Two things that's very important: Don't over torque your barrel nut and gas tube alignment. Assume you are going to be using a new barrel, so you don't really need headspace gauge.

cool cool. im assuming that the tools are less than the expense for a gunsmith to install. itd be good tho to have the personal knowledge/experience anyhow. what exactly is headspace? i have seen those "bullet" looking gauges but could never really figure out the application.....

Not really... if you don't have any tools right now you will be spending more money than just sending your rifle to the gunsmith. However getting your own tools is the way to go. In the long term you will be saving a lot of money, plus as you mentioned it's good to have the knowledge/experience.

About the head space question, you need to read this article is not to long and goes straight to the point!
