    Mini-14 as a lefty?

There's a good deal on a mini-14 at my LGS, and my wife wants a new caliber. But she is dead-set on shooting lefty.

    Is a mini-14 lefty friendly?

(Mind you, I'm old-school enough that I had to get the plastic thingies for the M16A1 before the geniuses came out with the lump on the A2)

I'm a lefty and have no problems with my Mini-14. It ejects brass forward.

I shoot left handed and never had a problem - then again the M-60 didn't give me a problem so maybe I'm just used to it.

If you're shooting at a range I think having a brass catcher is pretty much needed. Shooting off the opposite side of the bench usually means we can't set up a bench mounted deflector like a net or target in a block. E & L makes an excellent rigid, snap on catcher for the Mini. It works, it doesn't make the rifle jam & it stays put. My Mini has an adjustable gas port, I still use the catcher.

Forward? Geez, mine launches them into orbit.

My 183 Mini ejects brass about 5 ft forward and to the right. My 582 however ejects straight out to the right about 25-30 ft. I think they made a change to the ejector when they went to the Ranch Rifle with the scope mounts. I'm not a lefty, but I've read that the Mini is good for lefties because of the ambidexterous safety and mag release.

My mini also likes to ding brass as it bounces off the operating rod handle, bummer if you are a reloader.

I grew up shooting my dads mini 14. As a lefty shooter I have never had a problem with brass hitting me in the face from the mini 14.

The Op handle is the brass deflector. Not a problem on the mini.
