I inherited my 88 from my grandfather. (See Avatar) It's a 1963 .308. Just under the wire before quality took a hit.

It is in good shape after some TLC. I took the advice of the wise CalGunners and did not refinish or use anything too abrasive on the barrel rust. Just oil on a towel and lots of elbow grease.

Unfortunately, someone prior used something nasty on the barrel. It looks like sandpaper or steel wool. In any case, I keep it oiled and original.

I couldn't wait for slave pins, I sacrificed a drill bit to the cutting wheel and made some. Hooray for that YouTube video!

Nice gun. I just bought one 3 weeks ago for $300. Mine is also a .308. I bought it and it came in pieces.

It is NOT POSSIBLE to reassemble the thing without the proper slave pins. I strongly suggest ordering them. You will need two. Nu-Line carries the pins for $2.50 apiece.
After getting the pins, and a $9 manual off of ebay, I was able to get the thing back together relatively easily.
I bought an old Weaver tip-off base/rings combo and a vintage Weaver scope to top it off with.

How did you refinish the stock?? It looks nice. Mine definitely needs some TLC as well.
Actually all 88s regardless of date of manufacture are C & R eligible, they're specifically listed. In CA of course they must be (for now) +50 years old to be afforded dealerless sale/transfer.

Regarding the slave pins, I agree 100% - especially for the cap at the rear of the action. I made the mistake of trying to do it without them, it just doesn't work without the pins.
