Help choosing a new stock

I just got a custom remington 700 SPS .308 in a trade and the stock that's currently on it is a Choate Sniper Stock and that weighs 6lbs. I would rather have a stock that I can carry hunting rather than one that's just built for benchrest shooting. This is my first 700

try to find somebody who took their stock off their 5R or Police model 700. It's a HS Precision stock that's light and won't break the bank.

I would first take the barrel and action away off the stock and see what weighs more. It looks like you have a 24 inch varmint barrel.

Since this is a SPS/ADL I'm limited. H-S Precision is all out of stock right now for what I'm looking for. The Manners MCS-T, MCS-T3 and their MCS-SL (Super Light) look good. Their stocks would shed off 4 pounds from my setup

wrong rifle, buy a hunting rifle, this is a precision setup.

It's a 26 inch barrel.

If it's a hunting rifle, I'd have the barrel cut down to 18-20 inches. 26" on a 308 is overkill unless it's a dedicated competition rig. Even a barrel as short as 16" will still get you out to 800+ yards with most ammo, and up to 1000 with heavy 190 or 208 grain HPBT's. Like others have said, look into either Bell & Carlson or a Remington H&S Precision take-off stock for reducing weight. The newer Choate Tactical stocks are another option, they only weigh a little over 3 pounds.

26" for hunting is a little much IMHO. Try shooting that off hand. Cut the barrel and you will cut some weight.

I just got a boyds walnut classic stock for my savage 110. 100% drop in, good price, and it makes it look a heck of a lot better. Looks like a true hunting rifle now. Not sure how it groups yet but barrel is fully floated. You would need to open up the barrel channel for your heavy barrel.

+1 to Boyd's and having the barrel cut down. You'll end up with a much lighter, handier rifle.

I have my stock off my SPS Varmit if you want it. It paintied a textured brown but it works.
