    Mini 14

I have a registered mini-14 circa 1993. Is it legal to install a bull pup kit?

    Thanks

if it is a "registered assault weapon" it can get more assaultier

just make sure you had registered it as an assault weapon
back before 2000 it cost an additional $25 with a special form you had to fill out and send in

Just because you bought it prior to 2000 does not make it legal to make it into an assault weapon. If you didn't do the voluntary registration before the deadline, then it's no different from if you bought the Mini-14 yesterday.
I am not a lawyer, the above does not constitute legal advice.

        +1 DROS isn't registration.

To make it clear. This was registered in 2000 as an assault weapon. Is
it legal to install a U.S. made bull pup kit? I am asking because the
kit comes with a pistol grip.

Yes, if it was registered under SB23 you may evil-fy it.

Thanks Blue. So it's also legal to replace the thumbhole stock of my
SB23 registered L1A1 FAL to a 2 piece pistol grip and separate stock?

Yup. I think the thumbhole may be on there because of some 922r requirement though, so I'd replace them with US made parts just in case.

                    Blue,
Where can I get the U.S. made parts kit (pistol grip and stock) for the
                    L1A1?

I think the last day of registration was the last day of '99 (or am I wrong on that one?). So he is probably saying he registered it BEFORE 2000.

Also, I have heard BAD things about the bulpup stocks out there. Personally, if it were me, and I wanted to cheaply make a Mini-14 more compact I'd go with a Butler Creek folder until I could find one of those AC-556 folders that Ruger made. I've heard those are hands down the best folding stock for the Mini-14 and I'd have to agree based on looks alone.

ETA: This is a toy SBR version, but it gives you an idea.

I think that Dec 31st '99 was the last day anything cool was for sale in California.
