    80% Lower question

Everyone I have a couple questions that I am sure you guys can answer

    1. Who has a good 80% lower?
    2. If its raw aluminum, do you get anodized or cerakote?
    3. How much is it to anodize or cerakote?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I got two from Ares Amror - one raw which I polished and one anodized. If I got another I would probably just spray paint it FDE.

I got mine from Quentin Defense, as part of a group buy here. Anodized cost an extra $5. Very nice quality, and because it was billet, it is strong!

A lot of folks have answered about brand so I'll leave that be.

I'd recommend a Type III anodizing prior to anything else. It actually hardens the surface of the aluminum making it much more durable. Then, if you want to paint it, go for it.

Oh, and SA&T will engrave and or Type III anodize your lower. $35 for engraving (CNC). $40 for ano. They're located in Orange.

I have a TM and also picked up a nice anodized and laser engraved one from these guys before the panic. http://www.sureshotprecision.com/

It has the same keyhole forging mark as the TM.

What are the legalities regarding leaving a finished 80% lower to be anodized somewhere?
I can't imagine the idea is to anodize prior to final machining; leaving lots of soft aluminum without any protection?

                1. Who has a good 80% lower? Tactical Machining, Colfax tactical (Redmond Black rifle now), QD in Gilbert AZ are the top three I would use. Some others make them, but you could have issues with fit.
                2. If its raw aluminum, do you get anodized or cerakote? If it is raw aluminum be sure you select a reputable anodize who knows how to prep the surface otherwise you will get a crappy and dull finish. If you want it quick and easy you can have it cerekoted, Moly Res, or Alumahyde II from Brownells.
                3. How much is it to anodize or cerakote? That all depends on the batch quantity and which way you go. You would be surprised who can do anodizing...look up your local paint ball shop...those guys are usually really anal about how their stuff looks. It is important to remember that they are tools and don't have to look perfect, you might spend a fortune and the first round that is ejected will scratch it and you would be angry (possibly).

How about a 90% lower? maybe i'm over thinking this.
I can drill the hols for the FCG pin and not mechine the pocket out and send it to anyone to have it anodized. since its not YET a firearm.
So the bearing service of eh pin will be hardened.

once the lower is more than 80% finished, it is considered a firearm. thus you will need to send it to an anodizing shop that has a FFL

An 80% isn't considered a firearm, so you can leave it. There's isn't that much bare metal if you anodize first and machine later, and it's all internal. Or you can find a place that can so all of it in one day, line SA&T in Orange. They can help you machine the lower, will engrave it for you and have it anodized, all in the same day.

                            Hey guys
Gotta bring the thread back to life real quick.

If a buy an 80% lower, do I need that companies jig to complete the build or are the jigs universal from one 80% to the next?
