What does your OLL weigh?

What does your OLL(s) weigh with your must have accessories?

I have a 20" 5.56 Ar with standard A2 stock and carrying handle, cleaning kit in the buttstock for 8.5lbs. Sometimes I use a 3x9 scope with an Armalite mount; the weight is upped to 9.2 lbs or so.

While not an OLL rifle, my AR service rifle competition gun weighs in at 15lbs (unofficially; bathroom scale).



Standard NM AR configuration: A2 buttstock, heavy barrel, and A2 receiver with Ray-Vin 3-3/4 lb rear buttstock weight and Ray-Vin 2 lb front handguard weight.

Ocabj, what is the OD of that barrel? I'm assuming it's chrome moly non chrome lined? At what point on the rifle do you like to put the balance? At 15lbs, I'll bet rapid firing that beast is no problem at all!

Mines right at about 15lbs which is pretty typical for a Service Rifle--most guys have the buttstock wedge and some or all of the big forend weight. Shawn McKenna's is ludicrously heavy. His offhand mag brings the rifle up to around 25lbs.

I honestly don't know the contour diameters. Here's a reference picture (not the specific barrel on my competition rifle, but it's the same barrel just on a different upper):

The weight is for balance, but also for stability. The heavier rifle lessens rifle movement while in position, and is especially desired in standing.

Heavier and balanced rifles will have less lateral movement and what movement or wobble that does occur is slowed down quite a bit. Slowing down the wobble is great since you are basically timing your trigger pull for that nanosecond when the front sight post comes onto the target black.

I would say about 13-15 lbs.

But then I don't have a scale that would accurately weighs that amount.
Next time I get to a place that has a scale I will weigh the loaded C Mag and get a closer idea.

Nice photos, Ocabj! What range are you shooting at (yards)? Also, I noticed that only the lowest tip of the stock is contacting your shoulder. Is this as a result of keeping your neck as straight as possible? How does shooting this way affect the recoil?

The range in those photos is West End. I was able to take those since I was running the line as the line officer / RSO and not shooting the match.

Correct. Most shooters keep the stock high on the shoulder to get a cheekweld with good sight alignment. Recoil? As long as you get just enough of the butt on your shoulder (i.e. the toe of the stock), it recoils consistently and safely. Plus, the AR-15 doesn't have much recoil to begin with.

Bring the rifle up to your eye, not your eye down to the rifle. You'd do that with an M1A too (it has recoil, the AR has none worth mentioning).

My varminter as pictured is 11 lb 14 oz. A loaded 30 round mag would add 1 lb if I could plug one in, which I can't due to the Fab 10 lower...
