CAR-15/XM-177 Copy. what do you guys think?

So I've been working on a thread protector that gives you the look of having a CAR-15/XM-177 style flashhider on a 11.5" barrel, but with a 16 inch barrel. You guys think I came pretty close? I'm going to BB a 10/30 mag in my CMMG lower, buy a better matching stock and black foregrip to finish her. Right now the photos are of my FAB-10.

First I'd like to ask if anyone has an original that they can take some measurements on for me? That would help me out alot.

There are so many pics of these I didn't know which to choose to copy.

I made 2, first one (that's slitted) and the second that was closer to the best pic of an orginal I found, but I didn't complete the slits.

Going to go with this type of finish,(slotted one) anodized.



I'm going to make the slits more accurate to the original on my next one.

hmmm... why not mill out the center of an original to fit over the milled down barrel?

I have a real one around here somewhere, I'll see if I can find it and get some pics. The one in your pic has the collar that is seperate from the hider.

why not get one of the sleeves that bushmaster sells? Slides right over the barrel.

And that would be way too much work. That is pretty cool how he did that though. Would that affect accuacy at all?

With mine you get the same result except no actual flash hider. The idea is to have a thread protector the looks cool. Can be used on a detachable mag build also.

Yeah I believe the collar/adapter was used to launch rifle grenades. I included it to give some extra length.

1) Your build looks real nice.... I have an XM also but its just a bushy upper...

2) Aluminum muzzle devices wont work on an AR unless you perm pin it in place... The barrel is steel and will expand at a different rate than the aluminum and the device will constantly loosen. It doesnt happen on AKs because they have a detent pin to hold the brake/hider in place....

3) Go to AR15.com and look under Retro M16/AR discussions in the AR forum. Theres enough XM info to make you crazy

Yeah I noticed that they do come loose. I was making those fake cans out of aluminum and they would vibrate loose. I guess I could find a thin lock washer of some sort?

Hey, you still need me to turn out the slip in adapter to turn your XM flash hider into a muzzle break. We talked about it but never went through with it.
