Ca AR-15 legality

I was browsing this forum today and I ran into this: http://www.paul.net/guns/CaliforniaRifles.pdf I just called my local FFL and they said that they would transfer an AR lower receiver to me. I plan on building myself a regular AR-15 but with a 10 round "fixed magazine" that requires a bullet to remove.

I just want to make sure this is legal. Does anyone know if I'll run into trouble doing this? Secondly, does anyone know which brands are specifically banned in CA? I know Olympic Arms and Bushmaster are a no-no, but what else?

Begin with 1:45s and keep watching to 2:13... it will give you a good idea of where to start, courtesy of the very helpful Iggy Chinn of the DOJ. If you're wondering how the tool "Bullet Button" works it's demonstrated.

As noted you'll be able to have all the features of an illegal assault weapon (except more than a 10rd capacity) once installed.

If I get a lower receiver that is not banned by name right now, what happens if they ban it in a year or so? Is it okay because I owned it before it was banned?

They will more than likely give people an oportunity to register them before they get banned... that's it... So don't wait too long and buy about a 100 before the get banned If they ever get banned that is

That can't happen. Depending on how you look at it, fortunately or unfortunately, the DOJ gave up their own ability to list anything. Only the legislators have that authority.

Wow, are you in for some fun! First of all, Ar-15s are legal! Take your time and plan your rifle well: too many of us ended up buying every accessory and configuration available. I'll let you in on a secret:



AKs, Fals, MP5 clones, Sig 550s, FS 2000s, PS 90s too!


Just stay off the named AW list and pin your mags. You'll quickly learn what those are soon enough.

Thanks for the all the info everyone! One last question: If they do eventually ban whatever lower receiver I plan on getting, how will I know to register it? Is it automatically registered it when I pick it up at the FFL? Do I constantly have to keep checking to make sure they are not in the process of banning it?

It is not registered at the FFL. You will have to stay alert as to if or when they do something. Gives you another reason to keep coming back to CalGuns.
