    So...Cleaning your rifles

When I clean my rifles, it irritates me when I have to dip the patch into the solvent and put them on/off the jag... I always spilled the solvent everywhere during the process.

It is just me or everyone else feel the same? Is there any way to simplify the cleaning process?

What bothers your during the cleaning process?

Try using a foam cleaner like Wipe Out. Shoot it in, let it sit, shove a few dry patches through. Done.

I pour a little in a small dish. That way I only spill a little at a time.

I am going to have to give one of those new fangled foamy sprays a try.

I thought people hardly cleaned their barrels because it caused more harm than good?

I'll run a bore snake through there about every thousand rounds.

I use a boresnake because then I don't have to worry about patches and jags.

Spray this and let sit: http://shop.velcronius.com/FrogLube-...z-FLP-FS08.htm

              Then, bore snake.

Firearms have modernized, so have the ways of cleaning them.

I think there was this one video of some former US Army Sniper shooting team guy who said one of the things that he likes to do is to use a small jam jar or something and put in a handful of patches and pour in some solvent. Then just keep everything in the jar so every time you need a solvent soaked patch ya just open up the jar and pull them out one at a time.

It's a matter of personal preference. Barrel manufacturers make up break in procedures just for the sake of shutting people up(if they didn't, people would ask). The guy that runs Krieger(I think his name is John?) you can find in a video interview proclaiming how he hates cleaning barrels and sees more barrels screwed up from cleaning than shooting. Then consider that POI can shift with minor fouling, makes cleaning that fouling kinda pointless(unless you're shooting corrosive ammo).

Some people have OCD issues and are neat freaks, others accept that it doesn't matter if the thing is spotless, some people will go decades without ever running a patch through it.

I dont clean my match grade barrel rifles, no need because the groups dont open up and cold bore shots are closer to groups on a fouled barrel. But I cut a water bottle put patches in it and than poor bore tech(its odorless and cleans amazing), i also wrap them around the jag for more surface area, it doesn't drip as much either.

They are usually not recommended for semi-autos because the foam gets into the gas port and just sits there

If you shoot your rifle and find the barrel clogged with junk, then you have bigger issues than cleaning. The tolerances are so tight that when you shoot, the amount of pressure and friction between the bullet and bore will effectively force just about everything out.

It's a barrel, not a toilet bowl. There is no need to get OCD with it and scrub it to hell. A good cleaning product and a few passes with the bore snake is plenty.

Sticking that cleaning rod and brush in there like it's your favorite girl isn't doing the bore any good.

I put the patch on the jag then put solvent on it.

Of course, I use Slip 2000 products and it comes in the squeze bottle and it SMELLS LIKE ORANGES!!!!!

I clean every time I come back from the range. I prefer as little work as possible now rather then possibly face a lot of work later (or even an accident).

Dumping Hoppes #9 is a bane. I usually keep one of my old bottles and refill it with only 1/5th or 1/6th full. That way if I dump it, I'll have a smaller mess to clean.

My favorite tool for cleanup is always a toothbrush with soft bristles. That way if something catches, it wont bend some of the spring steel components inside certain guns like my S&W 4006.

I've certainly considered a jewelry cleaner big enough to fit my TT-33. I get nervous shooting surplus then wondering if I did enough after the cleanup.
Anyway...here's a dearth of reasoning to ponder: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Guns

If you knew of the health hazards of Hoppes #9, you'd want to stop using it immediately.
