    Want to build my first Ar Pistol

    Hey guys want to build my first AR Pistol and wanted to know some information before I start looking for parts.

    I have a stripped S&W M&P15 lower - Will this work?

    Then what type of barrel can you use? I want a 10.5" 11.5" barrel and does the gas port have to be pistol length or can it be Carbine length?

    Do I have to use a fancy pistol buffer tube or can I use a regular Buffer tube and pull some sort of material over it?

    Does the pistol take a regular upper and a regular LPK?

    Please add additional information if I'm missing anything.

    Thanks guys,

    You need a dedicated lower to be a pistol only or make one from a 80% lower.

      Given the questions you asked, I think it's best you leave the upper to a gunsmith to build. It will be hard to find all the parts you need though ...

        If you DROSED the lower as a rifle then no.

            You would be in violation of numerous local laws if you did.

            Your options are.

            Private party transfer an existing pistol.

            Complete an 80% lower (home built)

            Purchase one new under the single shot exemption.

            Do a search on this topic. It is covered almost weekly

              Last question, if I purchase a stripped lower from a private party can I DROSE it as a pistol or a single shot? Also what's the difference between the two?

              Thanks for all the great info guys.

                Single shot, would be a complete pistol-only capable of shooting one round (hence "single shot"), not a single stripped lower.

                Secondly, once the lower is deemed to be a rifle, it's forever a rifle. You can't simply DROS it as whatever you'd like.

                You need to meet CA's qualifications to be roster exempt to buy from a manufacturer and have it DROS'd as a pistol.

                  So basically at this point I can only go with an 80% lower or a Lower that was once registered as a pistol which I will probably will not find now? Well thanks for the great info I will start looking for a 80% lower.

                      A minor but important distinction for your search. Both DROS and voluntary registration processes may taint a receiver with the "long gun" descriptor. Attaching a rifle stock also taints the receiver, regardless of registration. Unless you can find a receiver that was originally purchased out of state as a pistol or "other" on the 4473 and imported into CA with voluntary registration as a pistol, or was purchased in CA either as a completed pistol or by someone exempt from the "safe list" (a LEO, for example), and has never had a rifle stock attached, your only other option is to complete an 80% receiver yourself.

                      I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

                          Another thing...

                          Federal = 4473
                          CA = DROS

                          The Feds allow a firearm (receiver) that has been 4473'd as a "handgun" or as an "other" to legally be made into a Title 1 handgun.
                          If the firearm (receiver) was 4473'd as a "long gun", then it can never be legally made into a Title 1 handgun.

                          Keep in mind that 4473 forms before 11-2008 did not have the "other" option and AR receivers were commonly 4473'd as "long gun".

                          Therefore...
                          Make 100% sure that the receiver you are going to use was 4473'd as a "handgun" or as an "other", before making it into a Title 1 handgun. Otherwise, the BATFE will want to talk to you about making an unregistered Title 2 firearm (SBR) {Federal felony}.

                            Okay thanks for all this great information I think the best way and the safest way to do this is with a 80% lower. Looks like RohgArms will start having more on Feb 1.
